Harvest<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, now in its 10<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> anniversary season, will feature farms and locations in Baltimore City, along with Baltimore, Kent, and Washington counties during a new episode premiering on Tuesday, January 31.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Farm &amp; During its 10<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> season, the series revisits some favorite farms and farmers from past episodes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The January 31 episode features the following segments:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Pahl\u2019s Farm: 45 Years at the Baltimore Farmers\u2019 Market (Baltimore City and Baltimore County)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: After Sam Hanson, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/farmersmarketbaltimore.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Baltimore Farmers\u2019 Market<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> manager, talks about the market\u2019s growth and why people enjoy it, viewers meet the Pahl family and learn that they have been selling their farm products at the market since it started 45 years ago. The segment moves to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pahlsfarmmd.com\/\"><b>Pahl\u2019s Farm<\/b><\/a><b> in Woodstock<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the 137-acre family farm where Pam Pahl describes the farm\u2019s history and how it has changed over time to meet consumer preferences<\/span><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Daughter Jen Pahl feeds the hogs and goats and shares how, after college, she returned to the farm full time and developed her own niche of products. Then it\u2019s back to the Baltimore Farmers\u2019 Market where the Pahls interact with customers and share their thoughts on celebrating 45 years at the market.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Fruit expert, Dr. Joe Fiola (Washington County):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> On a warm, summer afternoon, the series visits <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/antietamcreekvineyards.com\"><b>Antietam Creek Vineyard<\/b><\/a><b> in Sharpsburg<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Owner George Warnenhoven has asked Dr. Joe Fiola, a viticulture and small fruit specialist at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/agnr.umd.edu\/research\/research-and-education-centers-locations\/western-maryland-research-education-center\"><b>Western Maryland Research and Education Center<\/b><\/a><b> (WMREC)in Keedysville<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, to inspect his vineyard. WMREC tests a wide range of grains, fruits, and vegetables to determine which types will do best in Maryland\u2019s climate. At the WMREC research orchard, Dr. Fiola expresses his passion for winemaking. Then it\u2019s a visit to his processing room, where he turns grapes into wine. He explains that selecting the right grape variety for each region of the state isn\u2019t the only factor in a vineyard\u2019s success. Maryland grape growers must overcome challenges such as disease and climate factors including humidity, temperature, and precipitation. It\u2019s his job to assess this critical information and present recommendations to growers in a clear, understandable way.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>The Local Buy: Oksana\u2019s Produce and Fermenting (Kent County): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0It took Russian immigrant Oksana Bocharova many years to purchase the farm that turned a dream into reality. Oksana explains how she obtained a loan from the USDA as part of a program that helps immigrants, women, and new farmers start their own farms. The result is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oksanasproduce.com\/\"><b>Oksana\u2019s Produce Farm<\/b><\/a><b> in Chestertown<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Segment Host Al Spoler visits the farm near the Chester River where Oksana grows a wide variety of vegetables.\u00a0 Oksana, who learned about farming from her father in Russia, also applies family traditions to pickling and fermenting her vegetables. Al helps harvest vegetables and Oksana explains the fermenting process. Then it\u2019s on to pickling dill, leeks, and cabbage to make foods such as kimchi and Russian kraut. Al tries Oksana\u2019s kraut and tells viewers ways to use it will be available at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mpt.org\/farm\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mpt.org\/farm<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More than 15 million viewers have watched <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Farm &amp; Harvest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on MPT since its fall 2013 debut.
