She is joined by Al Spoler, who handles duties for each episode\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Local Buy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> segment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With introductions filmed at <\/span><b>MD-Delight Dairy in Westminster (Carroll County),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the February 8 episode features the following segments:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>The Love of Persimmons (Calvert County). <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bill Preston was a man who loved persimmons.\u00a0 His passion for this unusual, bright orange fruit led him to devote years to researching and growing them.\u00a0 Using what he learned, Bill planted a two-acre grove of trees in <\/span><b>Owings, Maryland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that became the northern-most, single-variety persimmon orchard in the country.\u00a0 While persimmons typically don&#8217;t thrive in cooler climates, Bill&#8217;s process of grafting the shoots of Asian persimmon trees to the roots of American persimmon trees led to an orchard able to withstand Maryland winters.\u00a0 After Bill died in 2019, his friends Sophie Kasimow and Seth Shames bought the farm and renamed it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PrestonsOrchard\/\"><b>Preston&#8217;s Orchard<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in his honor.\u00a0 The couple show viewers around the orchard during harvest time and take a load of their fruit to a distributor, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/number1sons.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Number 1 Sons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Washington, D.C.\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Harvesting Sorghum (Carroll County). <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It&#8217;s harvest time at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dellbrosgrain.weebly.com\/\"><b>Dell Brothers Farm<\/b><\/a><b> in Westminster<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and while the farm grows plenty of different crops, during this segment the harvest is something a bit unusual \u2013 sorghum.\u00a0 During a ride in the combine with Greg Dell, he explains why this grain is a good fit for the Carroll County farm.\u00a0 While not as popular as corn, wheat, or soybeans, sorghum has some natural advantages.\u00a0 It suffers less crop damage from deer and it seems to do well even during dry years when other crops struggle.\u00a0 After the crop is harvested, viewers see Greg&#8217;s father Gary Dell manage the truckloads of sorghum being delivered to a grain elevator, where it will be stored before being taken to Pennsylvania to be added to bird seed mixes.\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>The Way it Works:<\/i><\/b><b> The Nightshade Family. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many families have unusual family members, but as Joe Ligo shows, plant families can really be strange.\u00a0 On this installment of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Way it Works<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Joe gives a walkthrough of the &#8220;Solanaceae&#8221; family, often known as &#8220;Nightshades.&#8221;\u00a0 Potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers, and eggplants are among this family of foods and spices. But beware, also among Nightshades are hazardous and toxic plants, such as hot peppers and tobacco.\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>The Local Buy:<\/i><\/b><b> Turmeric (Anne Arundel County). <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0J.J. Minetola traded the hard work of being a professional chef for the hard work of being a farmer.\u00a0 At <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/miseenplacefarm\/\"><b>Mise En Place Farm<\/b><\/a><b> in Davidsonville<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, he grows a host of interesting vegetables.\u00a0 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Local Buy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019s Al Spoler gets his hands dirty helping J.J. dig up an unusual spice \u2013 turmeric. These knobby, bright orange roots are related to ginger and are known for their health benefits, and customers at the farmer&#8217;s market can&#8217;t get enough of them.\u00a0 While typically found in tropical climates, J.J. has found a way to successfully grow turmeric in a greenhouse.\u00a0 After harvesting and cleaning the crop, J.J. shares his turmeric-seasoned rice with Al.
