She is joined by Al Spoler, who handles duties for each episode\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Local Buy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> segment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With introductions filmed at <\/span><b>the Carroll County Farm Museum in Westminster<\/b> <b>(Carroll County),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the January 18 episode features the following segments:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Tobacco Buyout (Southern Maryland).<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Farm &amp; Harvest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> first visits <\/span><b>Mead\u2019s Lane Farm in Owings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to talk with farmer <\/span><b>Mike Phipps.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Phipps explains how and why he continues to grow tobacco at his Calvert County farm. Only a handful of Maryland farms still produce tobacco, which was once the most popular crop in the state.\u00a0 This is due, in part, to the tobacco buyout program enacted by the state in 2000 to draw down the crop. Ninety percent of Maryland tobacco farmers have taken the buyout, including <\/span><b>Brian Russell<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/russellbrosLLC\/\"><b>Russell Brother\u2019s Farm<\/b><\/a> <b>in Morganza<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, in St. Mary\u2019s County. While difficult to give up the traditions and long history associated with the family farm\u2019s tobacco heritage, Russell explains the benefits of transitioning to raising more grain and other crops.\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Sotterley Plantation (St. Mary\u2019s County). <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stories of endurance, resilience, and resistance are deeply rooted at historic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sotterley.org\/\"><b>Sotterley<\/b><\/a> <b>in Hollywood<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. For a century and a half, enslaved people were forced to work against their will at this former tobacco plantation. <\/span><b>Gwendolyn Bankins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a descendant of enslaved people who lived on the National Historic Landmark farm and a member of Sotterley\u2019s board of directors, has dedicated herself to uncovering and sharing stories of her ancestors. In addition, Sotterley\u2019s Descendants Project brings the farm\u2019s complex history to light and connects families of the former owners, workers, and enslaved people who were once part of the plantation. The path toward healing at Sotterley also includes using the farmland for good. The program\u2019s efforts have resulted in 70,000 pounds of food being donated to local food banks over the past decade.\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>The Way it Works: <\/i><\/b><b>Driving a steam tractor. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Segment host Joe Ligo goes back in time, with the help of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/marylandsteam.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Steam Historical Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0 In the bygone days before modern high-tech tractors, farmers used steam engines to do their work.\u00a0 Joe show viewers just how much effort it takes to run one of these antique machines, and then takes an old steam tractor for a spin.\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>The Local Buy:<\/i><\/b><b> Old Line Plate (Baltimore City).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Food historian and blogger <\/span><b>Kara Mae Harris<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> takes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Local Buy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> segment host Al Spoler to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.32ndstreetmarket.org\/\"><b>Waverly 32nd Farmers Market<\/b><\/a><b> in Baltimore City<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to select and purchase locally grown produce and meat. These fresh ingredients are used by Kara and Al to prepare some home-cooked historic Maryland dishes taken from Kara\u2019s Maryland food blog, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oldlineplate.com\/\"><b>Old Line Plate<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
