She is joined by Al Spoler, who handles duties for each episode\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Local Buy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> segment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With introductions filmed at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoober.com\/HooberLocations\/NewWindsor-MD\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hoober, Inc.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a farm equipment dealer in <\/span><b>New Windsor (Carroll County),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the November 16 episode features the following segments:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>The Brood X Cicadas of 2021<\/i><\/b><b> (Montgomery and Baltimore counties). <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Farm &amp; Harvest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> team travels to Laytonsville in Montgomery County to meet with University of Maryland Entomologist Paula Shrewsbury, where she shares with viewers the science behind the 17-year cicadas\u2019 re-emergence and her passion for the unique insects. At<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playtimepastures.com\/\"> <b>Playtime Pastures<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Woodstock (Baltimore County), farmer Jamie Condon shares a similar affinity for cicadas because of the protein-packed snack they provide her free-range chickens. On the other hand, cicadas prove problematic for other aspects of Maryland agriculture such as new tree production. Back at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruppertnurseries.com\/\"> <b>Ruppert Nurseries<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Laytonsville, Farm Operations Manager Nick Graves goes into detail about the damage done to young trees as a result of the cicadas\u2019 summer visit.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>African American Farmers<\/i><\/b><b> (Prince George\u2019s County and Washington, D.C.). <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Despite historical oppression and abuse faced by African American farmers in years past, Gail Taylor has chosen to write her own narrative to cultivate a brighter future for agriculture.<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/threepartharmonyfarm.org\/\"> <b>Three Part Harmony Farm<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, run by Gail in Northeast Washington D.C., is an example of what current and future generations of Black farmers can accomplish. She\u2019s aligned herself with like-minded individuals to form the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/blackdirtfarmcollective\/\"> <b>Black Dirt Farm Collective<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which strives to redefine the relationship that Black people have with agriculture. The collective recently purchased 24 acres of land in Upper Marlboro (Prince George\u2019s County) to create a space to help grow and inspire new generations of Black farmers.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>The Local Buy: Beets at Common Root Farm <\/i><\/b><b>(Montgomery County).<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Segment host Al Spoler visits<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/commonrootfarm.com\/\"> <b>Common Root Farm<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in <\/span><b>Derwood,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> where farm staff is busy harvesting a variety of vegetables. Ryan Kalivretenos focuses on cultivating a variety of colorful beets with benefits that support a healthy immune system. Cristin Coop of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coopssoups.com\/\"> <b>Coop\u2019s Soups<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Olney sources the fresh beets grown at the Common Root Farm to create delicious and nutritious beet soup. Cristin explains the ingredients that go into her beet soup and then Al gets a taste. A beet soup recipe will be available for viewers at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpt.org\/programs\/farm\/recipes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mpt.org\/farm\/recipes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Farm &amp; Harvest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> airs on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. on MPT-HD and online at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mpt.org\/livestream\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mpt.org\/livestream<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
