With the help of his wife and business partner, Tope Fajingbesi, they learned about the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/montgomeryplanning.org\/planning\/agricultural-reserve\/\">Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, where 93,000 acres spread across the county have been set aside for agricultural use. A nonprofit called The <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mocoalliance.org\/\">Montgomery Countryside Alliance<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> then helped Balogun connect to a landowner. This connection enabled him to start <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dodofarmsmd.com\/dodo-farms\">Dodo Farms<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Brookeville, a produce operation that grows both familiar items and traditional Nigerian crops.<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>Starting a Family Farm<\/i><\/b><b> (Carroll County).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Many Maryland farms are passed down through generations of families. Colin O&#8217;Meara knew he wanted to farm, but his family didn&#8217;t have one. He started the 107-acre <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Stone-Valley-Farm-758911957515355\/?ref=page_internal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Stone Valley Farm<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Westminster in 2003 and has been growing his operation ever since. Another way this first-generation farmer brings in income is by &#8220;custom farming.&#8221; In this scenario, O\u2019Meara plants and harvests grain on farmland owned by Carroll Bish and in the process learns a thing or two about farming.<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>The Way it Works &#8211; Skid Loaders:<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Segment host Joe Ligo takes a look at a skid-steer loader, one of the most used and most versatile machines on the farm.<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>The Local Buy: Highland Cattle<\/i><\/b><b> (Kent County).<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Local Buy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> segment host Al Spoler heads to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/runningw.eatfromfarms.com\/\"><b>Running W Farm<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Chestertown, where farmer Jim Lindauer raises the unique Highland breed of cattle. Al gets a close look at these cows, which are known for their hairy coats and long horns. Lindauer raises these cattle because of their ability to thrive in a grass-fed operation. Highlands also produce leaner meat than other breeds. Al samples some of Running W\u2019s beef in sandwiches from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happychickenbakery.com\/\"><b>Happy Chicken Bakery<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a local Chestertown bakery and caf\u00e9. She is joined by Al Spoler who handles duties for each episode\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Local Buy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> segment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ten million viewers have tuned in to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Farm &amp; Harvest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> since its 2013 debut. The series has taken MPT viewers to more than 400 farms, fisheries, and other agriculture-related locations, covering every Maryland county, as well as Baltimore City and Washington, D.C.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Maryland Department of Agriculture is MPT&#8217;s co-production partner for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Farm &amp; Harvest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
