The corn earworm can cause massive damage by devouring crops. Thankfully, farmers have a weapon to fight back. University of Maryland Entomologist Galen Dively explains how Bt corn is genetically engineered to produce a suite of toxins that kill earworms, but are harmless to humans and livestock. From test plots at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ars.usda.gov\/northeast-area\/beltsville-md-barc\/beltsville-agricultural-research-center\/\"><b>Beltsville Agricultural Research Center<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, viewers learn how some pests are evolving resistance to Bt corn and learn how scientists are working to stay one step ahead of these bugs.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>Corn Silage<\/i><\/b><b> (Washington County).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> A dairy cow needs a lot of energy to produce large amounts of milk, on average 80 pounds of milk per day, and corn is often part of their balanced diet. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Farm &amp; Harvest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> visits <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/JA-Horst-Sons-Dairy-and-Excavating-319412828663857\/?ref=page_internal\"><b>J.A. Horst and Sons<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Clear Spring, west of Hagerstown, where farmer Brent Horst is harvesting corn silage. While the corn is still green, the plants are chopped up, packed into a silo, and fermented. University of Maryland Extension Agent Jeff Semler explains how this preserves the corn and provides cows with healthy, nutritious feed all year long.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>The Local Buy: Sweet Corn<\/i><\/b><b> (Harford County). <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Did you know there&#8217;s a big difference between the corn you eat on the cob and the corn that&#8217;s made into cornmeal? <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Local Buy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> segment host Al Spoler stops by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Hopkins-Produce-223364054370762\/\"><b>Hopkins Produce<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Havre de Grace where he learns the difference between sweet corn, which is eaten fresh, frozen, or canned, and field corn, which is dried out and used for cornmeal and livestock feed. Dave Hopkins even shows Al how to pick sweet corn by hand. Dave\u2019s wife, Michele, then shares her recipes for fresh corn soup and corn pudding. In this new segment, the series takes a bird&#8217;s-eye-view trip across Maryland to see cornfields from above. Watch how corn goes from planting to harvest, with stops at <\/span><b>Seneca Ayr Farms <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in Laytonsville (Montgomery County)<\/span><b>, 2 Cool Farms <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in Greensboro (Caroline County), <\/span><b>Piccadilly Farm <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in Worton (Kent County),<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/winterbrookfarms.com\/\"><b>Winterbrook Farms<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in Thurmont (Frederick County),<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><b>Springfield Farm <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Queenstown (Queen Anne\u2019s County).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nearly 10 million viewers have tuned in to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Farm &amp; Harvest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> since its 2013 debut.
