{"id":24844,"date":"2020-11-10T15:48:11","date_gmt":"2020-11-10T20:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/?p=24844"},"modified":"2020-11-10T16:10:03","modified_gmt":"2020-11-10T21:10:03","slug":"update-deadline-for-planting-cover-crops-extended-to-december-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/press-release\/2020\/11\/10\/update-deadline-for-planting-cover-crops-extended-to-december-1\/","title":{"rendered":"UPDATE: Deadline for Planting Cover Crops Extended to December 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<b>ANNAPOLIS, MD <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Due to continued rainfall and excessively wet field conditions across most of the state, the Maryland Department of Agriculture has announced a second extension of the planting deadline for farmers who signed up for grants to plant fall cover crops through the Maryland Agricultural Water Quality Cost-Share (MACS) Program.\u00a0Farmers now have until <\/span><b>December 1 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to plant qualifying cover crops of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">wheat, spelt, rye, and triticale<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in their fields.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Farmers who plant their cover crops between <\/span><b>November 13<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>December 1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will still qualify for financial support through the program, however, in order to maximize water quality benefits, suppression\/kill down may not take place before <\/span><b>May 1, 2021<\/b><b><i>.\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The planting extension is only available to farmers who use the following planting methods: no till, conventional, or broadcast with light, minimum, or vertical tillage. With the extension, farmers must certify their cover crop with their local soil conservation district within one week of planting and no later than <strong>December 8<\/strong> in order to be reimbursed for associated seed, labor, and equipment costs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland\u2019s Cover Crop Program is administered by the MACS Program and the state\u2019s 24 soil conservation districts.
