ANNAPOLIS, MD <\/b>\u2013 Governor Larry Hogan and First Lady Yumi Hogan hosted the 12th\u00a0annual Buy Local Cookout at Government House this evening, and officially recognized \u201cMaryland Buy Local Week,\u201d which encourages Marylanders to take the\u00a0Buy Local Challenge<\/a>\u00a0by incorporating at least one locally grown, produced, or harvested product into their meals each day. Governor Hogan officially declared July 20-28 as \u201cMaryland Buy Local Week\u201d to raise awareness about the benefits of local farms and food so that Marylanders will become more familiar and more frequent consumers of fresh, local products.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Buy Local Cookout and Maryland Buy Local Week allow our citizens to celebrate our hard working farmers, watermen, and producers while showcasing our state\u2019s vibrant culinary offerings,\u201d said Governor Hogan. \u201cEach year I am amazed by the creativity of the recipes and the wide variety of ingredients grown and produced right here in Maryland. I want to encourage all Marylanders to participate in the Buy Local Challenge, to incorporate at least one local product in each of your meals throughout the week.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Buy Local Challenge, created in 2006 by the\u00a0Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission<\/a>, has grown into a statewide initiative that has continued to expand. In its 2012 Policy Choices Survey, the University of Baltimore Schaefer Center for Public Policy found that more than 78% of Marylanders said they want to buy produce grown by a Maryland farmer. Maryland\u2019s agriculture and seafood industries contribute more than $16 billion to the state\u2019s economy and account for more than 68,000 jobs, according to a\u00a02018 study from BEACON at Salisbury University<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn addition to providing fresh, nutritious products throughout the region, Maryland\u2019s agriculture and seafood industries are the economic engine of our rural communities,\u201d said Agriculture Secretary Joe Bartenfelder. \u201cThe Buy Local Challenge is a great opportunity to support our state\u2019s top industry and learn more about where our food comes from.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Governor Hogan invited teams of local chefs and producers to submit original recipes that highlight the diversity of Maryland\u2019s products. Over 40 recipes were submitted and 16 were selected. First Lady Yumi Hogan and Government House chefs provided an entr\u00e9e and dessert for the cookout. This year also featured recipes by student chefs from Crossland High School in Prince George\u2019s County, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore at the Universities at Shady Grove in Montgomery County, and the Chesapeake Culinary Center in Caroline County.<\/p>\n

All recipe submissions have been compiled and published in the\u00a0Recipes from the 2019 Maryland Buy Local Cookout<\/em><\/a>cookbook,\u00a0which includes wine, beer, or spirits pairing recommendations. This year\u2019s cookbook and all previous cookbooks are available on the department\u2019s\u00a0website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In addition to those contributing to the recipes featured at the cookout, the\u00a0Brewers Association of Maryland<\/a>,\u00a0Maryland Distillers Guild<\/a>,\u00a0Maryland Wineries Association,<\/a>\u00a0George\u2019s Mixes<\/a>,\u00a0Honest Tea<\/a>,\u00a0Greenstreet Gardens<\/a>,\u00a0Hiddenvale Flowers<\/a>, and four of the nine dairy farms on the\u00a0Maryland\u2019s Best Ice Cream Trail<\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Kilby Cream<\/a>,\u00a0Prigel Family Creamery<\/a>,\u00a0South Mountain Creamery<\/a>, and\u00a0Woodbourne Creamery at Rock Hill Orchard<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 also provided products for the event. Musical entertainment was provided by\u00a0The Geckos<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Attendees included agricultural leaders, producers, chefs, buyers from grocery stores, restaurants and institutions, and legislators.<\/p>\n
