The program is the result of 2018\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mgaleg.maryland.gov\/webmga\/frmMain.aspx?id=hb0698&amp;stab=01&amp;pid=billpage&amp;tab=subject3&amp;ys=2018rs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/mgaleg.maryland.gov\/webmga\/frmMain.aspx?id%3Dhb0698%26stab%3D01%26pid%3Dbillpage%26tab%3Dsubject3%26ys%3D2018rs&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1547918422394000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFR9ngSyHDhPbSj2YRQiu_4zz-HfQ\">Maryland House Bill 698<\/a>, and will allow farmers to partner with institutions of higher learning to grow industrial hemp for research purposes. Regulations were published in today\u2019s edition of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dsd.state.md.us\/MDR\/4602.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.dsd.state.md.us\/MDR\/4602.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1547918422394000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGJA7LR2BpWrwwzV1JNNvoXKC4XJw\">Maryland Register<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u201cIndustrial hemp presents a new opportunity that could open new markets for our farmers and help us make sure that rural Maryland continues to stay open for business,\u201d said Secretary Joe Bartenfelder. \u201cThis will be the first step toward a potentially viable commodity crop and we are excited to move forward with this pilot program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Farmers interested in growing industrial hemp will need to partner with an institution of higher learning to develop a research project and a plan for the use and\/or destruction of the crop. Applicants will also be required to apply for an FBI criminal background check.
