Photo credit: Maryland Public Television&#8217;s Maryland Farm &amp; Harvest<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>ANNAPOLIS, MD\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Maryland Public Television\u2019s (MPT) popular original series <em>Maryland Farm &amp; Harvest<\/em>, in its sixth season, will feature farms and other locations in Baltimore, Prince George\u2019s, Talbot and Worcester Counties as well as Baltimore City during a new episode airing <strong>Tuesday, January 15 at 7 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mpt.org\/programs\/farm\/\">Maryland Farm &amp; Harvest<\/a> takes viewers on journeys across the state, telling stories about the farms, people, and technology required to sustain and grow Maryland\u2019s number one industry: agriculture. During the past year, MPT\u2019s production team has filmed episode segments at more than four dozen farms in preparation for the new season. Segments featured on the upcoming episode are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wheat to Brownies <em>(Talbot County, Baltimore County, and Baltimore City)<\/em>:<\/strong> In this segment, viewers follow Maryland wheat from the field to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nagelgrain.com\/\">Nagel Farm Service<\/a><\/strong> in Wye Mills, one of the state\u2019s grain elevators, and eventually to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atwatersfood.com\/\">Atwater\u2019s<\/a><\/strong>, a Baltimore area culinary institution. Viewers meet owner Ned Atwater, who explains why the soft red winter wheat raised in Maryland is key to making his delicious chocolate brownies.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong>Prince George\u2019s County Conservationist:<\/strong> This segment looks at the changing landscape of farming in Prince George\u2019s County through the eyes of agricultural advocate and Soil Conservation District Manager <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nacdnet.org\/soil-champs\/northeast\/steven-darcey\/\">Steve Darcy<\/a><\/strong>. Viewers visit Steve\u2019s farm, <strong>Edgewood Farm<\/strong> in Upper Marlboro, where he implements the latest conservation practices, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbf.org\/about-cbf\/locations\/maryland\/facilities\/clagett-farm\/\">Clagett Farm<\/a><\/strong> in Upper Marlboro, home to a three-day soil health training event Steve organizes. Finally, viewers are taken to a local community garden, where Steve and a soil scientist use a piece of technology called an XRF Analyzer to measure heavy metals in the soil \u2013 something particularly useful at farms in developed areas. Despite continuing development, there are 60,000 acres of farmland in the county.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong>The Whole Hog <em>(Worcester County)<\/em>:<\/strong> When it comes to pork \u2013 ham, bacon, and chops are just the beginning. During this segment, viewers find out what it means to go &#8220;whole hog.\u201d Farmer Bob Mattie of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Elysiumpigs\/\">Elysium Farm<\/a><\/strong> in Berlin explains his approach to raising pigs, and why he believes consuming nearly every part of the pig is a way to pay respect to his animals.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong><em>The Local Buy:<\/em><\/strong><strong> Rice <em>(Prince George\u2019s County)<\/em>:<\/strong> Maryland is not known for growing rice, but if farmer Nazirahk Amen of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.purpletools.net\/about-us\/\">Purple Mountain Organics<\/a><\/strong> has anything to do with it, someday it will be. During a visit to a rice field at the<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/UDCFirebirdFarm\/about\/?ref=page_internal\">University of DC Firebird Research Farm<\/a><\/strong> in Beltsville, Nazirahk explains dryland rice production to <em>The Local Buy<\/em> segment host Al Spoler. Al then gets a taste of the rice crop there in the form of a delicious vegetarian gumbo.
