During the past year, MPT\u2019s production team has filmed episode segments at more than four dozen farms in preparation for the new season. Segments featured on the upcoming episode are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Milk to Eggnog\u00a0<em>(Howard and Frederick Counties)<\/em>:<\/strong>\u00a0Eggnog is synonymous with the holidays and in Maryland there\u2019s no better way to celebrate the season than with a glass of creamy eggnog using milk from a local farm. This segment follows farmer Denny Patrick\u2019s milk from\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/mdmapledellfarm\/about\/?ref=page_internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/mdmapledellfarm\/about\/?ref%3Dpage_internal&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1545509498541000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHT2pQfUX7HCRDXYH3P_mWblutVNw\">Maple Dell Farm<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in Woodbine\u00a0to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/dairymaiddairy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/dairymaiddairy.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1545509498541000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEJdOxRzH8rZCoGhR5ez3fAOK5rJA\">Dairy Maid Dairy<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in Frederick, where it\u2019s the key ingredient in this Christmas favorite.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong>Great Kids Farm <em>(Baltimore County)<\/em>:<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimorecityschools.org\/greatkidsfarm\">Great Kids Farm<\/a><\/strong> in Catonsville, owned and operated by Baltimore City Public Schools, gives students an opportunity to experience a day on the farm. This segment follows a curious group of third graders as they enjoy the sights, sounds, and tastes of Maryland agriculture. Each year approximately 3,000 school students visit Great Kids Farm.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong>Cut Flowers <em>(Baltimore County)<\/em>: <\/strong>A bouquet of fresh flowers is always lovely, but there are other ways to enjoy a beautiful bloom, as participants at a recent workshop conducted at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.butterbeefarm.com\/\">Butterbee Farm<\/a><\/strong> in Pikesville discover in this segment. Farmer Laura Beth Resnick harvests upwards of 3,000 stems each week from her 3.5-acre farm, which she sells to about 50 florists in the Baltimore-Washington region. She also hosts events, including an annual floral wreaths workshop, during which customers learn to make floral crowns.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong><em>The Local Buy:<\/em><\/strong><strong> The Next Super Fruit <em>(Kent County)<\/em>:<\/strong> From kale to quinoa to goji berries, super foods are all the rage. During this segment, <em>The Local Buy<\/em> host Al Spoler reveals that the next big super fruit might be growing in Maryland. At <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chesterriveraronia.com\/\">Chester River Aronia<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in Chestertown. farmers Roy and Molly Mears raise Aronia: a small, dark, berry prized for its health benefits, but not for its astringent taste. Originally from Russia, Aronia found its way to Chestertown, in part, thanks to University of Maryland Extension Specialist Andrew Ristvey, who began researching the fruit\u2019s potential in 2006 and now helps farmers like the Mears grow it. Al tastes the berry on its own and in a recipe for zucchini bread designed to mask the harsh flavor. The recipe is available to viewers at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mpt.org\/programs\/farm\/recipes\/\">org\/farm<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Segments featured on the <em>Maryland Farm &amp; Harvest<\/em> episode airing on Tuesday, January 1 are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wet Spring <em>(Caroline and Carroll Counties)<\/em>:<\/strong> The biggest variable in farming is the weather. When it\u2019s extreme, as it was this past growing season, the effects can be devastating. This segment explores the impact the year\u2019s exceptionally wet weather had on crops. It begins at <strong>2 Cool Farms <\/strong>in Greensboro, where farmer Chris Schoonover has seen damage to his wheat and corn crops. Next, the series visits <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/baughers.com\/\">Baugher\u2019s Orchards<\/a><\/strong> in Westminster where farmer Dwight Baugher surveys his apple crop, damaged by heavy rain. He says in 27 years, this growing season was the worst he has seen.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong>Showing for Recovery <em>(Harford County)<\/em>:<\/strong> <strong>Twin Stream<\/strong> <strong>Learning to<\/strong> <strong>Live Ranch <\/strong>in Pylesville is a unique recovery house, in that it is also a working farm, owned and operated by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.charhope.org\/\">Char Hope Foundation<\/a><\/strong>. The women living there are battling addiction and working to recover through learning to raise and show Charolais cattle. Founder Derek Hopkins explains the program, as viewers follow 24-year-old Lea through her journey to the Maryland State Fair.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong>State Fair President <em>(Carroll and Baltimore Counties<\/em>):<\/strong> Donna Myers of <strong>Windsor Manor <\/strong>in New Windsor has been attending the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marylandstatefair.com\/\">Maryland State Fair<\/a> <\/strong>in Timonium for as long as she can remember. Back when she was a kid growing up on her parents\u2019 dairy farm, the fair was an annual vacation \u2014 a chance to see people in the community, show animals, and just have fun with her family. Today, as the fair\u2019s newly elected president, Donna is responsible for getting the fair ready for more than half a million visitors.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong><em>The Local Buy:<\/em><\/strong><strong> Blue Crab <em>(Dorchester County):<\/em><\/strong> <em>The Loc<\/em><em>al Buy<\/em> segment host Al Spoler visits <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lindysseafood.com\/about\">Lindy\u2019s Seafood<\/a><\/strong> on Hoopers Island for a look at how its staff picks, processes, and, in some cases, pasteurizes crab meat. Then, Al heads to Wegmans, where Executive Chef Kevin Grenzig explains how he uses Lindy\u2019s crabmeat in the supermarket\u2019s fresh sushi and its mac &amp; cheese.
