{"id":22584,"date":"2018-10-01T14:27:21","date_gmt":"2018-10-01T18:27:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/?p=22584"},"modified":"2018-10-01T14:27:34","modified_gmt":"2018-10-01T18:27:34","slug":"public-notice-unscheduled-mosquito-control-spraying-in-baltimore-county-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/press-release\/2018\/10\/01\/public-notice-unscheduled-mosquito-control-spraying-in-baltimore-county-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Public Notice: Unscheduled Mosquito Control Spraying in Baltimore County"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">ANNAPOLIS, MD\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">\u2013 The Maryland Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with the local department of health, will expand mosquito control services in the\u00a0<b>Pikesville<\/b>\u00a0area of Baltimore County due to a public health concern over the potential for mosquito-borne diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) truck-based spraying to control adult mosquitoes is planned for the evening of\u00a0<b>Tues<strong>day, October 2,<\/strong><\/b>\u00a0in the\u00a0<b>Pikesville<\/b>\u00a0area within a one-mile radius of the intersection of Milford Mill Road and Cliffedge Road. This includes parts of the following communities:\u00a0<b>Sudbrook, Old Court, Williamsburg, and Willow Glen.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">Spraying will occur after 7:30 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, spraying will be re-scheduled for the next available evening. Any existing spray exemptions in the area will be temporarily suspended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">Mosquito Control personnel will use a permethrin-based solution that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/mosquitocontrol\/permethrin-resmethrin-d-phenothrin-sumithrinr-synthetic-pyrethroids-mosquito-control\">EPA has approved<\/a>\u00a0for use in public health mosquito control programs without posing unreasonable risks to human health. However, out of an abundance of caution, the department recommends avoiding outdoor activities during spraying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">While not all mosquitoes carry diseases, the Maryland Department of Agriculture suggests that residents take precautions to minimize their exposure to mosquito bites. These measures include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">Wear long, loose fitting, light colored clothing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">Wear insect repellents according to product labels<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">Avoid mosquito infested areas during prime periods of activity (between dusk and dawn)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">Install, inspect, and repair window and door screens in homes and stables<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">Regularly clean bird baths and bowls for pet food and water<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">Remove or empty all water-holding containers\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\">All Marylanders are encouraged to follow the Department\u2019s Twitter feed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/MdAgMosquito\">@MdAgMosquito<\/a>\u00a0that will post unscheduled spray events and other timely information about mosquito control in Maryland.
