{"id":22505,"date":"2018-09-14T16:00:08","date_gmt":"2018-09-14T20:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/?p=22505"},"modified":"2018-09-14T16:01:26","modified_gmt":"2018-09-14T20:01:26","slug":"unscheduled-mosquito-control-spraying-in-multiple-counties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/press-release\/2018\/09\/14\/unscheduled-mosquito-control-spraying-in-multiple-counties\/","title":{"rendered":"Public Notice: Unscheduled Mosquito Control Spraying in Multiple Counties"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\"><em>Spraying Planned for Sunday-Monday Evenings<\/em><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\"><strong>ANNAPOLIS, MD<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The Maryland Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with the local departments of health, will expand mosquito control services in\u00a0<strong>Severna Park<\/strong>\u00a0(Anne Arundel),\u00a0<strong>Laurel<\/strong>\u00a0(Anne Arundel),\u00a0<strong>Rising Sun<\/strong>\u00a0(Cecil), and\u00a0<strong>Reisterstown<\/strong>\u00a0(Baltimore) due to a public health concern over the potential for mosquito-borne diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) truck-based spraying to control adult mosquitoes is planned for the evening of\u00a0<strong>Sunday, September 16,<\/strong>\u00a0in the following areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Severna Park:<\/strong>\u00a0Within a one-mile radius of the intersection of Old Country Road and Waters Road. This includes parts of the following areas:\u00a0<strong>Crofton Knolls, Cypress Creek, Jones Station, Manhattan Beach, Mariners Point, Round Bay, Severna Park, Swan Ridge<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Laurel:<\/strong>\u00a0Within a one-mile radius of the intersection of Fort Meade Road and Brock Bridge Road. This includes parts of the following areas:\u00a0<strong>Laurel, Maryland City.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Rising Sun:\u00a0<\/strong>Within a one-mile radius of the intersection of Joseph Biggs Memorial Highway and Simmers Road.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) truck-based spraying to control adult mosquitoes is planned for the evening of\u00a0<strong>Monday, September 17,<\/strong>\u00a0in the following areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Reisterstown:<\/strong>\u00a0Within a one-mile radius of the intersection of Glyndon Drive and Sacred Heart Lane. This includes parts of the following areas:\u00a0<strong>Arborwood, Chartly, Crandon, Glyndon Gate, Glyndon Greens, Glyndon Mews, The Preserve, St. George\u2019s, Suburbia, Timber Chase, Tree Top Station, Worthington Meadows.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Spraying will occur after 7:30 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, spraying will be re-scheduled for the next available evening. Any existing spray exemptions in the area will be temporarily suspended.<\/p>\n<p>Mosquito Control personnel will use a permethrin-based solution that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/mosquitocontrol\/permethrin-resmethrin-d-phenothrin-sumithrinr-synthetic-pyrethroids-mosquito-control\">EPA has approved<\/a>\u00a0for use in public health mosquito control programs without posing unreasonable risks to human health. However, out of an abundance of caution, the department recommends avoiding outdoor activities during spraying.<\/p>\n<p>While not all mosquitoes carry diseases, the Maryland Department of Agriculture suggests that residents take precautions to minimize their exposure to mosquito bites. These measures include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wear long, loose fitting, light colored clothing<\/li>\n<li>Wear insect repellents according to product labels<\/li>\n<li>Avoid mosquito infested areas during prime periods of activity (between dusk and dawn)<\/li>\n<li>Install, inspect, and repair window and door screens in homes and stables<\/li>\n<li>Regularly clean bird baths and bowls for pet food and water<\/li>\n<li>Remove or empty all water-holding containers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All Marylanders are encouraged to follow the Department\u2019s Twitter feed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/MdAgMosquito\">@MdAgMosquito<\/a>\u00a0that will post unscheduled spray events and other timely information about mosquito control in Maryland.
