Treatment is scheduled for Monday, May 14, during daylight hours.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The department will treat the area by boat, using an apparatus designed specifically for midge control, which will apply a\u00a0<em>Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti)<\/em>-based insecticide to the riverbed.\u00a0<em>Bti<\/em>\u00a0is a naturally occurring bacteria found in soils worldwide. It is a bacterial insecticide, not a chemical, and is only harmful to a very limited variety of organisms including midge, black fly, and mosquito larvae and a few other aquatic Dipteran (flies) insects.\u00a0<em>Bti<\/em>\u00a0is not harmful to humans, fish, crabs or other aquatic invertebrates.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mda.maryland.gov\/plants-pests\/Documents\/bti-factsheet.pdf\">More Information\u200b<\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The Midge Suppression Pilot Program was established by Governor Hogan August 10, 2017, via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/attachments\/MDGOV\/2017\/08\/10\/file_attachments\/861304\/Executive%2BOrder%2B01.01.2017.17.pdf\">Executive Order 01.01.2017.17<\/a>.
