{"id":2191,"date":"2012-10-31T12:10:25","date_gmt":"2012-10-31T12:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/?p=2191"},"modified":"2012-11-01T12:11:25","modified_gmt":"2012-11-01T12:11:25","slug":"mda-secretary-provides-preliminary-report-on-agriculture-damage-caused-by-hurricane-sandy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/press-release\/2012\/10\/31\/mda-secretary-provides-preliminary-report-on-agriculture-damage-caused-by-hurricane-sandy\/","title":{"rendered":"MDA Secretary Provides Preliminary Report on Agriculture Damage Caused by Hurricane Sandy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Agriculture Secretary Buddy Hance today issued the following statement outlining preliminary damage assessment from Maryland\u2019s agriculture community resulting from Hurricane Sandy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur preliminary assessments indicate that farmers across the state experienced high winds, flooding, power losses as a result of excessive rain and tree and limb damage but minimal damage.\u00a0 Overall Maryland agriculture fared well with no significant loss or structural damage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUSDA\u2019s Farm Service Agency will further assess damages to agriculture \u2013 crops, livestock, conservation \u2013 and we should have a better indication of those estimates in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, it is important that farmers who did experience crop damage stay in close contact with their crop insurance agent. Farmers must notify their agent within 72 hours of discovering crop damage, continue to care for their crop as normal and obtain permission from the insurance company before destroying any crops. Farmers who are unable to take corn or soybean crops to harvest should contact their insurance company before taking action.
