Not all shelters allow pets. If you need to locate a shelter for your pet during an emergency or disaster, listen to the radio for instructions from local civil authorities, or contact the county emergency operations center to find a shelter that accepts pets. Maryland has a Pet Sheltering Plan, which will activate when mass care evacuation centers open. \u00a0For a list of local emergency management offices, see:<a href=\"http:\/\/mema.maryland.gov\/Pages\/LocalEOC.aspx\">http:\/\/mema.maryland.gov\/Pages\/LocalEOC.aspx<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) recommends that, in the event of a disaster, owners of companion animals:<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Prepare an animal evacuation kit as detailed by the American Veterinary Medical Association.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.avma.org\/disaster\">http:\/\/www.avma.org\/disaster<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Take copies of your pet\u2019s vaccination history and medical records with you.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure your pet wears a collar with identification (tattoo, ID tag, microchip, etc.) that includes a phone number.<\/li>\n<li>Bring a crate, leash, at least a three-day supply of food, water, and all medication your pet takes, and a few of your pet\u2019s favorite toys.<\/li>\n<li>Keep a current photo of your pet, in case it gets lost.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u201cYour animals depend on you to be prepared in the event of a disaster situation,\u201d said Maryland State Veterinarian Dr. Guy Hohenhaus. \u00a0\u201cTake the extra time now to create a comprehensive disaster plan to ensure the safety and well-being of you, your family, and your pets.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0For more information about disaster planning, contact the Maryland Emergency Management Agency at 1-877-MEMA-USA or log on to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mema.maryland.gov\/\">www.mema.maryland.gov<\/a>.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With Hurricane Sandy\u2019s approach, it is important to include pets in your disaster preparedness plans.
