ANNAPOLIS, MD <\/strong>\u2013 The Maryland Department of Agriculture today announced that Julie Oberg has been named deputy secretary of agriculture, effective January 3. She replaces Jim Eichhorst, who accepted the position of Maryland State Executive Director of the Farm Service Agency, United States Department of Agriculture.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are very pleased with this announcement,\u201d said Agriculture Secretary Joe Bartenfelder. \u201cJulie\u2019s talent and experience will be a great asset to the Hogan-Rutherford Administration, the department, and our agricultural community.\u201d<\/p>\n

As deputy secretary, Oberg will manage the day-to-day operations of the agency and help ensure that its programs continue to serve, promote and regulate the state\u2019s agriculture industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am honored and excited by the opportunity to help lead the department,\u201d Oberg said.\u00a0\u201cI look forward to building on my experience at the department and my relationship with the agricultural community to advance the goals of the department, the Administration and our farmers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oberg has been with the State of Maryland since 2004, most recently serving as communications director for the Department of Agriculture. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with a minor in Spanish from the University of Maryland, College Park.<\/p>\n
