{"id":2134,"date":"2010-12-02T18:35:43","date_gmt":"2010-12-02T18:35:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/?p=2134"},"modified":"2012-10-18T18:37:33","modified_gmt":"2012-10-18T18:37:33","slug":"media-advisory-omalley-family-to-cut-fresh-local-christmas-tree-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/press-release\/2010\/12\/02\/media-advisory-omalley-family-to-cut-fresh-local-christmas-tree-2\/","title":{"rendered":"MEDIA ADVISORY: O&#8217;MALLEY FAMILY TO CUT FRESH, LOCAL CHRISTMAS TREE"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em>First Family Encourages Marylanders to Buy Locally Grown Christmas Trees from Local Farms<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<p><!-- Article Text -->ANNAPOLIS, MD (December 2, 2010) \u2013 Governor Martin O\u2019Malley, First Lady Katie O\u2019Malley and their children will kick off the holiday season by visiting a Maryland family farm to cut their own fresh, local tree for the holidays.\u00a0 The O\u2019Malley family encourages all Marylanders to buy their Christmas tree from a local farm.<\/p>\n<p>When buying directly from a local farmer, dollars circulate through the local economy four times, strengthening our communities.\u00a0 In addition, the farms that grow Christmas trees stabilize soil, protect water supplies and provide wildlife habitat while creating scenic green belts.<\/p>\n<p>Tree varieties grown in Maryland include:\u00a0 Douglas-fir, Concolor Fir, Canaan Fir, Fraser Fir, Scotch Pine, White Pine, and Blue Spruce.<\/p>\n<p>While they&#8217;re growing, real Christmas trees absorb carbon dioxide and other gases and emit fresh oxygen, unlike artificial trees which are petroleum-based. When growing in open space, a 3\u201d in diameter Douglas Fir tree can reduce atmospheric carbon by 23 pounds and intercept 102 gallons of storm water runoff per year.<\/p>\n<p>According to the 2007 Census of Agriculture, of the 200 tree growing farms in Maryland, 168 farms harvested 77,801 trees valued at $2.4 million.\u00a0 In Maryland, Carroll County has the greatest number of cut Christmas tree farms with 22. Baltimore, Frederick, Garrett and Montgomery round out the top five counties.
