{"id":21071,"date":"2017-03-06T14:01:58","date_gmt":"2017-03-06T19:01:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/?p=21071"},"modified":"2017-03-06T14:01:58","modified_gmt":"2017-03-06T19:01:58","slug":"usda-confirms-highly-pathogenic-h7-avian-influenza-in-tennessee-breeder-flock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/press-release\/2017\/03\/06\/usda-confirms-highly-pathogenic-h7-avian-influenza-in-tennessee-breeder-flock\/","title":{"rendered":"USDA Confirms Highly Pathogenic H7 Avian Influenza in Tennessee Breeder Flock"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\"><em>First confirmed case of HPAI in a commercial flock in the U.S. this year<\/em><\/h3>\n<p align=\"left\">\n<strong>ANNAPOLIS, MD<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The Maryland Department of Agriculture is alerting all poultry owners and growers to remain vigilant and enhance biosecurity practices now that a highly pathogenic H7 avian influenza (HPAI) virus has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/aphis\/newsroom\/news\/sa_by_date\/sa-2017\/hpai-tn\">confirmed in a commercial chicken breeder flock<\/a> in Lincoln County, Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u201cThis outbreak in Tennessee is a stark reminder that HPAI can hit anywhere, anytime, and we need to make sure we are prepared for a possible outbreak here in Maryland,\u201d said Agriculture Secretary Joe Bartenfelder. \u201cI urge all of our poultry owners\u2014from large commercial operations to small backyard flocks\u2014to remain vigilant in your biosecurity practices and recordkeeping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The United States Department of Agriculture\u2019s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic H7 avian influenza of North American wild bird lineage in a commercial chicken breeder flock in Lincoln County, Tennessee. The flock of 73,500 is located within the Mississippi flyway.
