{"id":2082,"date":"2010-11-29T14:52:36","date_gmt":"2010-11-29T14:52:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/?p=2082"},"modified":"2012-10-18T14:54:18","modified_gmt":"2012-10-18T14:54:18","slug":"training-for-on-farm-poultry-and-rabbit-processing-certification-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/press-release\/2010\/11\/29\/training-for-on-farm-poultry-and-rabbit-processing-certification-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Training for On-Farm Poultry and Rabbit Processing Certification"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><em>Registration is still open for farmers who want to become certified for off-farm sales<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<p><!-- Article Text --><span style=\"font-size: small\">ANNAPOLIS, MD (Nov. 29, 2010) \u2013 To help farmers meet growing consumer demand for local meats, the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) in partnership with the University of Maryland and Southern Maryland Agriculture Development Commission (SMADC) will conduct a training workshop for on-farm poultry and rabbit slaughter and processing.\u00a0 This workshop is part of a voluntary certification program to assist small poultry and rabbit operations to meet the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene\u2019s approved source requirements to sell poultry and\/or rabbit (off-farm) at farmers\u2019 markets or to restaurants and retailers in Maryland.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">Workshop participants will learn to recognize diseases of public health concern, take basic biosecurity measures, write and implement basic Standard Sanitary Operating Procedures, develop Good Manufacturing Practices and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point plans, and properly dispose of offal and waste water.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">To become certified for off-farm sales, producers must:<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 complete the training;<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 pass a brief test at the training;<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 submit an application for certification along with a $75 annual fee; and<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 be inspected by MDA;<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 MDA inspectors will conduct an inspection at least once per year to verify that producers are following food safety requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Training will be held from 9:00 a.m. \u2013 5:00 p.m. on Thurs, Dec. 16, 2010, at St. Mary\u2019s County\u2019s Charlotte Hall Library, 37600 New Market Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622. The training fee is $20 which includes lunch and materials.
