Nominations Due October 11, 2016<\/em><\/h3>\n


\nANNAPOLIS, MD \u2013 <\/strong>To honor the leaders of Maryland\u2019s thriving agricultural community, the Maryland Department of Agriculture\u00a0 is accepting nominations of farmers and farm families for the Governor\u2019s Agriculture Hall of Fame and the Outstanding Young Farmers Award. Both honors pay tribute to those who have dedicated their lives to one of the state’s leading industry. Any farm family or young farmer that derives its income principally from farming is eligible for the award.<\/p>\n

Nominations for both awards are due by October 11, 2016, and will be reviewed by the Governor\u2019s Selection Committee.\u00a0The selection committee includes the Dean of the University of Maryland\u2019s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the President of the Maryland Farm Bureau, and members of the agricultural community.\u00a0 The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held during the Maryland Agricultural Dinner in February 2017. Hall of Fame: <\/u><\/strong>Since 1991, when the Hall of Fame was established, 47 farm families have been honored for their high standards of conduct; personal values; contributions to their community; and performance, leadership, innovation, and achievement in agriculture. Nomination forms are available on the department\u2019s website<\/a> or local Extension offices, which serve as local nominating committee coordinators.\u00a0 Each local nominating committee, which is made up of the county extension educator, county farm bureau president, county fair representative, and county soil conservation district chairman, reviews a pool of candidates from its county and forwards a selection to the Governor\u2019s Selection Committee.\u00a0 \u00a0Note: Applicants MUST work with their county Extension Office in preparing the application. Only one nomination per county is permitted.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Outstanding Young Farmer<\/u><\/strong>: To honor the up-and-coming leaders of Maryland\u2019s thriving agricultural community, the Maryland Department of Agriculture is accepting nominations of young farmers for the Maryland Outstanding Young Farmer Award. The award pays tribute to a deserving young farmer who has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to agriculture in Maryland, progress in their agricultural career, use of resource conservation practices, and contributions to their community. Nomination forms are available on the department\u2019s website<\/a>.\u00a0 Farmers between the ages of 21 and 45 years old who derive at least 50 percent of their income from farming is eligible for the award.\u00a0 Nominations may be submitted by anyone including the nominee.\u00a0 Awards will be determined based on personal contributions in the following categories: progress in agricultural career; use of resource conservation practices; and contributions to agriculture and community organizations.<\/p>\n
