{"id":2042,"date":"2010-10-21T17:39:45","date_gmt":"2010-10-21T17:39:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/?p=2042"},"modified":"2012-10-16T17:42:26","modified_gmt":"2012-10-16T17:42:26","slug":"training-for-poultry-and-rabbit-certification-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/press-release\/2010\/10\/21\/training-for-poultry-and-rabbit-certification-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Training for Poultry and Rabbit Certification"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em>Farmers Must Attend Seminar to Participate in the New Program<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<p><!-- Article Text -->ANNAPOLIS, MD (October 21, 2010) \u2013 The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) in partnership with the University of Maryland and Southern Maryland Agriculture Development Commission (SMADC) will conduct a training workshop for on-farm poultry and rabbit slaughter and processing.\u00a0 This workshop is a voluntary certification program to assist small poultry and rabbit operations to meet the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene\u2019s approved source requirements to sell poultry and\/or rabbit (off-farm) at farmers\u2019 markets or to restaurants and retailers in Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>Workshop participants will learn how to recognize diseases of public health concern, basic biosecurity measures, how to write and implement basic Standard Sanitary Operating Procedures, Good Manufacturing Practices and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point plans, offal and waste water disposal.<\/p>\n<p>To become certified for off-farm sales, producers must:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 complete the training;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 pass a brief test at the training;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 submit an application for certification along with a $75 annual fee; and<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 be inspected by MDA;<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 MDA inspectors will conduct an inspection at least once per year to verify that producers are following food safety requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Training will be held at the Charlotte Hall Library, 37600 New Market Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622.\u00a0 Thurs, Dec. 16, 2010, 9:00 a.m. \u2013 5:00 p.m. The training fee is $20 and includes lunch and materials.
