{"id":1874,"date":"2010-06-11T15:17:40","date_gmt":"2010-06-11T15:17:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/?p=1874"},"modified":"2012-10-04T15:20:30","modified_gmt":"2012-10-04T15:20:30","slug":"providence-center-partners-with-first-lady-katie-omalleys-grow-it-eat-it-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/press-release\/2010\/06\/11\/providence-center-partners-with-first-lady-katie-omalleys-grow-it-eat-it-garden\/","title":{"rendered":"PROVIDENCE CENTER PARTNERS WITH FIRST LADY KATIE O&#8217;MALLEY&#8217;S &#8220;GROW IT EAT IT&#8221; GARDEN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small\"><em>PROVIDES AND PLANTS SUMMER VEGETABLE SEEDLINGS<\/em> <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">PROVIDENCE CENTER PARTNERS WITH FIRST LADY KATIE O\u2019MALLEY\u2019S \u201cGROW IT EAT IT\u201d GARDEN, PROVIDES AND PLANTS SUMMER VEGETABLE SEEDLINGS<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 11, 2010) \u2013 With summer gardening underway, the University of Maryland Master Gardeners along with individuals involved with the Providence Center, Inc.\u2019s Horticulture Program today planted summer vegetable seedlings in First Lady Katie O\u2019Malley\u2019s Grow It Eat It garden.\u00a0 The plants were grown by clients of Providence Center through the organization\u2019s Horticulture Program located in Anne Arundel County.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u201cThis exciting and unique partnership highlights the services the Providence Center provides and links them with the State\u2019s backyard food gardening promotion,\u201d said First Lady O\u2019Malley.\u00a0 \u201cWe look forward to growing out the seedlings and expanding the garden offerings as an example of what all Marylanders can do whether they have a patio with planters or a larger backyard garden to improve their health and fitness and to better understand how food is grown.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">Providence Center clients, University of Maryland Extension\u2019s Master Gardeners and Maryland Department of Agriculture staff joined together to put in a variety of vegetable plants including tomatoes, cucumbers,\u00a0 eggplant, peppers, summer squash, herbs and beans.\u00a0 The seedlings were grown by Providence Center clients in their four greenhouse facilities.\u00a0 Plants grown by the Providence Center are available for sale as part of the job training program.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">First Lady O\u2019Malley is partnering with University of Maryland Extension\u2019s Home and Garden Information Center and Master Gardeners to promote the \u201cGrow It Eat It, campaign\u201d which encourages Maryland families to improve health and save money by growing fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs using sustainable practices.\u00a0 The campaign hopes to encourage 1 million Marylanders to produce their own affordable, healthy food.\u00a0 More information on the campaign and the University of Maryland\u2019s Master Gardener program can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.growit.umd.edu\">www.growit.umd.edu<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">Last year, Maryland became one of the first states, if not the first state in the nation, to have a backyard food garden at the Governor\u2019s home.\u00a0 The vegetable garden sets a realistic example of what Maryland families can do in their own backyards.\u00a0\u00a0 This year, the program has expanded to include a gardening lecture series and a honey bee colony.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">The Providence Center, Inc. provides services that allow individuals with disabilities to enjoy increased self-determination in leading a more independent, valuable and functioning role in society.
