Runde, DVM, is the current president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/rs6.net\/tn.jsp?e=001bfWntSb1lo8T2zrgDPU3ZiguD5p9VXMhPTD9486rEmoPeu3oZNUEI-Us-RGje1k7geB1OhFVOSVNtp4b3kVgyMGkJa985dPpyC6Z6LF62dnJ9IPApISGz3xtdUUONnC_a1P_OjaXwJH9mLUdWgZaUK-h2ATNyWoHF18cmgKCwtw=\" target=\"_blank\">Maryland State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners<\/a>, a seven-member board charged with setting and enforcing\u00a0standards for veterinarians, registered veterinary technicians, and veterinary hospital owners.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Dr. Runde has practiced at\u00a0Tidewater Veterinary Hospital in Charlotte Hall since\u00a01987, where he and five other veterinarians\u00a0currently operate a\u00a0mixed practice with an emphasis on small animals, horse and small ruminants.\u00a0This practice was purchased from Dr. Henry Virts (former Secretary of Agriculture) and Dr. Clarence Little who established it in 1959.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u00a0became\u00a0interested in the State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners as a way to expand my\u00a0experiences as a professional, explore the world of regulatory medicine and give something back to the profession,&#8221; said Dr. Runde.\u00a0&#8220;It has been a challenging and rewarding experience and I am very proud of our staff.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Board has successfully promulgated important legislation\u00a0to help animal shelters get access to important sedatives and to streamline inspection of veterinary hospitals across the state.\u00a0\u00a0It is\u00a0working\u00a0to raise the standards for continuing education for veterinarians and to enable\u00a0veterinary students to get more hands-on experience in the next legislative session.\u00a0 The Board\u00a0has also\u00a0hired\u00a0 Assistant Attorney General Claudia Diamond to help\u00a0manage a ballooning case load.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>&#8220;My vision for the Board is to be as accessible to the public as possible as we seek to fulfill our mission in protecting them and their animals by ensuring that the veterinary medicine practiced in Maryland is of the highest quality,&#8221; continued Dr. Runde. &#8220;We aspire to high levels of availability, accountability and ability and we are determined to respond in a timely professional manner to all complaints, questions and requests.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Dr. Runde is actively involved with agriculture-related organizations. He was on the Board of Directors of the Summerseat Sanctuary, a working historic farm in St. Mary&#8217;s county.\u00a0 For more than two decades he has been a member of both the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Maryland Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA) and is currently the Secretary of the Maryland Veterinary Foundation, the MVMA&#8217;s scholarship committee. Dr. Runde also wrote an\u00a0 &#8220;Ask The Vet&#8221; column for Equine Athlete magazine.<\/p>\n<p>He currently resides\u00a0on Briarpatch Farm, a 50-acre farm\u00a0in Mechanicsville with his wife Karen and two children, where they\u00a0raise horses,\u00a0Labrador retrievers and ring-necked pheasants.
