{"id":1627,"date":"2010-04-02T15:14:35","date_gmt":"2010-04-02T15:14:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/?p=1627"},"modified":"2012-10-02T15:16:49","modified_gmt":"2012-10-02T15:16:49","slug":"governor-omalley-requests-usda-secretarial-disaster-designation-to-help-farmers-recover-from-snowstorm-related-losses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/press-release\/2010\/04\/02\/governor-omalley-requests-usda-secretarial-disaster-designation-to-help-farmers-recover-from-snowstorm-related-losses\/","title":{"rendered":"Governor O&#8217;Malley Requests USDA Secretarial Disaster Designation to Help Farmers Recover from Snowstorm Related Losses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em>16 of 23 Counties Report Excessive Damage to Farm Property<\/em> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ANNAPOLIS, MD (April 2, 2010) \u2013Governor Martin O\u2019Malley has requested that U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack issue a Secretarial Disaster Designation as a result of agricultural damage sustained during the historic snow storms in February.\u00a0 The Governor has requested that all Maryland counties that meet the threshold for the designation be included in the designation so that producers may receive assistance that becomes available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaryland agricultural producers experienced excessive losses of structures, equipment, crops\u2014including nursery crops\u2014and livestock as a result of the blizzards in February,\u201d said Governor O\u2019Malley. \u201cWe want to make sure that we\u2019ve done everything we can to see that all available assistance is triggered.\u00a0 On behalf of Maryland farmers, I thank Sec. Vilsack for acting quickly upon this request so that appropriate relief can be made available to eligible producers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through its assessments, the Maryland State Office of the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) has indicated that individual farm operations in 16 of the state\u2019s 23 counties sustained excessive damage and in some cases total losses of livestock, structures, crops and equipment. Counties that FSA has identified are: Garrett, Allegany, Washington, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George\u2019s Anne Arundel, Harford, Cecil, Queen Anne\u2019s, Caroline, Dorchester, Wicomico, Worcester, and Somerset.\u00a0 If the designation is made, all adjacent counties are automatically included.\u00a0 FSA estimates damage at almost $10 million.<\/p>\n<p>A disaster designation would make low interest loans and revenue assistance available to eligible producers.\u00a0 In addition, MDA has compiled a wide variety of resources available to help farmers recover from the snow storms.
