Farm-to-School and Gleaning Participant<\/em> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CLINTON, MD (April 16, 2010) \u2013 Agriculture Secretary Buddy Hance visited Miller\u2019s Farm in Clinton yesterday for an informal discussion of current agricultural subjects and issues and to learn more about the Miller Family\u2019s operation.\u00a0 The visit is part of Governor Martin O\u2019Malley\u2019s Capital for a Day celebration being held in Capitol Heights the same day.<\/p>\n<p>During his visit, Secretary Hance talked with Phil Miller, about his farm\u2019s diversification to meet consumer demand.\u00a0 They discussed the Miller&#8217;s participation in the Maryland Farm to School program, expansion of their operation to include a nursery, bakery and ice cream shop and their gleaning activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoyed visiting Miller\u2019s Farm and learning more about their historic operation that has expanded in response to consumer demand for buying locally direct from farmers and getting a taste of what farm life is all about,\u201d said Secretary Hance.\u00a0 \u201cWe thank Phil Miller and <a title=\"http:\/\/millerfarmsproduce.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/millerfarmsproduce.com\/\">Miller\u2019s Farm<\/a> for hosting us and look forward to a great spring and summer growing season for Maryland agriculture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Established in 1840, Miller Farms is one of Maryland&#8217;s oldest family run working farms centrally located in the Washington, DC area.\u00a0 In 1964, the Miller family opened a small market to sell produce grown on their farm.\u00a0 In the late 1970&#8217;s, the family expanded the operation to include pick your own produce and tailgate markets.\u00a0 In 2007, the operation expanded to include a bakery and ice cream shop and they also operate a nursery.<\/p>\n<p># # #<\/p>\n<p>Follow MDA on Twitter <a title=\"@MdAgDept\" href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/MdAgDept\">@MdAgDept<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- End Article --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Farm Includes DC-area Produce Market, Bakery, Nursery, Agri-tourism;
