Seven dairy farms are participating in MDA’s Ice Cream Trailblazer promotion. Under the program, people pick up an Ice Cream Trailblazer Passport at any of the seven creameries (or online at www.marylandsbest.net) and have it “stamped” at each creamery. Those who submit a completed passport to MDA before September 7 will be entered in a drawing for the grand prize, which includes a $50 gift certificate to the winner’s favorite creamery.

Who/What:

Secretary Hance visits two more farm-based creameries that are on the “Maryland’s Best Ice Cream Trail” in celebration of National Ice Cream Month.

Why:

To highlight the important contributions of Maryland’s 495 dairy farms which accounted for $182.7 million in sales in 2010; and to increase the public’s general understanding of dairy farming by encouraging them to visit a farm and see what dairy farming is really like, all while enjoying delicious, locally produced ice cream.

When/Where: Wednesday, July 18

1:30 p.m. – 2 p.m.: Misty Meadow Farm Creamery, 14230 Misty Meadow Road, Smithsburg (Washington County)

2:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.: South Mountain Creamery, 8305 Bolivar Road, Middletown (Frederick County)

Note to Reporters:

Secretary Hance visited three creameries on June 20 (Rocky Point Creamery, Prigel Family Creamery and Broom’s Bloom Dairy) and will be visiting the remaining two this summer (Kilby Cream in Cecil County and Chesapeake Bay Farms in Worcester County).

Several dairies in the state produce ice cream on farm but do not sell it directly to consumers on the farm.
