To that end, we have compiled <a href=\"\/pdf\/recoveryresources.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">a list of resources<\/a> that may be of use to you.<br \/>\nThe list of resources includes, information about<a href=\"\/pdf\/ensavemdrebuild.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> cash incentives for energy projects<\/a> to all of Maryland\u2019s agricultural producers offered by the Maryland Statewide Farm Energy Audit Program through the Maryland Energy Administration.<\/p>\n<p>Update: 2\/26\/10<\/p>\n<p>ANNAPOLIS, MD (Feb. 26, 2010) \u2013 The Maryland Department of the Environment has offered <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mde.state.md.us\/assets\/document\/MDE_LMA_Animal_Supplemental_Guidance.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">provisions for emergency burning of debris as part of the clean up from the recent snow storms<\/a>.\u00a0 Information and financial incentives for energy efficient equipment and\/or solar photovoltaic systems for those who may want to build or rebuild in greener and more energy efficient ways will be available in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>Update: 2\/25\/10<\/p>\n<p>Burning debris associated with downed poultry and livestock facilities. Maryland Department of the Environment issues <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mde.state.md.us\/assets\/document\/MDE_LMA_Animal_Supplemental_Guidance.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">guidance for emergency burning of poultry and livestock houses and manure storage structures due to the recent snow storms.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Annapolis, MD (Feb. 9, 2010) \u2013 With reports of poultry house and livestock barn collapses, the Maryland Department of Agriculture advises producers on appropriate disposal of mortality.<\/p>\n<p>Contact your insurance agent AND USDA Farm Service Agency <a href=\"http:\/\/offices.sc.egov.usda.gov\/locator\/app?state=md&amp;agency=fsa\" target=\"_blank\">county office<\/a> as soon as possible.\u00a0 FSA must be contacted within 30 days of the event or loss to apply for assistance programs. FSA has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fsa.usda.gov\/FSA\/newsReleases?area=newsroom&amp;subject=landing&amp;topic=pfs&amp;newstype=prfactsheet&amp;type=detail&amp;item=pf_20090917_distr_en_lip09.html\" target=\"_blank\">Livestock Indemnity Program<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fsa.usda.gov\/FSA\/newsReleases?area=home&amp;subject=prod&amp;topic=pfs&amp;newstype=prfactsheet&amp;type=detail&amp;item=pf_20091112_farln_en_loaninfo.html\" target=\"_blank\">Loan Programs<\/a> which may apply.\u00a0 Insurance and indemnity programs may require documentation of loss prior to clean up.<br \/>\nFor veterinary assistance, call your private veterinarian. Private veterinarians will contact MDA if additional assistance is necessary.<br \/>\nFor Poultry: MDA advises a tiered approach depending upon what facilities are available.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 First recommendation is to compost dead birds in the manure storage facility.\u00a0 Second is to compost outside with appropriate set backs from surface water.\u00a0 University of Maryland Extension Fact Sheets provide instruction on this process.\u00a0 If these procedures are not an option, land filling and commercial composting can be considered with appropriate permitting and\/or direction from local officials.\u00a0Contract growers should contact their companies before taking action.\u00a0 During this snow emergency, contact your county emergency operations center where the local health department, which authorizes and can advise on certain disposal methods, should be represented.\u00a0 They also have a direct connection with the state emergency operations center to marshal state resources.<\/p>\n<p>UMD Extension Fact sheets:\u00a0 Composting for Catastrophic Event Poultry Mortality, www.mda.state.md.us\/pdf\/compostpoultrycatastrophe-umd.pdf Guidelines for In-House Composting of Catastrophic Poultry Mortality., www.mda.state.md.us\/pdf\/compostpoultrycatastropheinhouse-umd.pdf County extension specialists are very good resources, but may not be available during this snow emergency.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;text-decoration: underline\"><strong>For Livestock: <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Depending upon facilities, off-farm disposal by rendering or commercial land filling may be needed when and where on-farm livestock disposal by burial or burning is not practicable or not permitted by local Health Officer.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Burial on farm.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There are some areas of Maryland where burial will not be a legal option for disposal of large animal carcasses.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Composting on farm.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 There is a large amount of information available on this carcass disposal method.\u00a0 There may be regions of Maryland which prohibit composting of livestock, please check with your county authorities.
