{"id":12048,"date":"2014-11-06T13:30:36","date_gmt":"2014-11-06T18:30:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/?p=12048"},"modified":"2014-11-06T13:30:36","modified_gmt":"2014-11-06T18:30:36","slug":"november-15-is-the-last-day-homeowners-may-apply-fertilizer-to-lawns-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mda\/press-release\/2014\/11\/06\/november-15-is-the-last-day-homeowners-may-apply-fertilizer-to-lawns-this-year\/","title":{"rendered":"November 15 Is the Last Day Homeowners May Apply Fertilizer to Lawns This Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mda.maryland.gov\/SiteAssets\/Pages\/fertilizer\/MDA%20magnet_press3.jpg?resize=332%2C425\" alt=\"\" width=\"332\" height=\"425\" \/>Annapolis, MD<\/strong> \u2013 The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) reminds citizens that November 15 is the last day they may fertilize lawns under Maryland\u2019s new Lawn Fertilizer Law. \u00a0Lawn care professionals have until December 1, provided they use specially formulated products that reduce the risk of nutrient runoff into streams, rivers and the Chesapeake Bay.\u00a0 Both citizens and lawn care pros may resume lawn fertilizer applications March 1, as long as the ground is not frozen or heavy rain is not predicted.<\/p>\n<p>Maryland\u2019s lawn fertilizer law became effective October 1, 2013 and includes new Bay-friendly rules for both for lawn care professionals and homeowners to follow when fertilizing lawns. In addition, lawn care professionals must be licensed and certified by MDA to apply fertilizer to the properties they manage. MDA maintains a list of certified lawn care professionals on its website at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mda.maryland.gov\/fertilizer\">www.mda.maryland.gov\/fertilizer<\/a>. The law requires both homeowners and lawn care pros to follow University of Maryland fertilizer recommendations and use best management practices when fertilizing lawns.\u00a0 <strong><em>Lawn fertilizer products containing nitrogen or phosphorus CANNOT: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 Be applied by homeowners between November 16 and March 1<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 Be applied by lawn care pros between December 1 and March 1. From November 16 through December 1, only water soluble nitrogen (not slow release) may be applied to lawns at a maximum rate of \u00bd pound per 1,000 square feet\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 Be applied to lawns when the ground is frozen or if heavy rain is predicted<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 Be used to de-ice walkways and driveways<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 Be applied within 15 feet of streams or other waterways.
