Recipes for the event, submitted by teams of Maryland chefs and producers, were selected for their availability of ingredients, geographic representation, maximum use of local ingredients and creativity. Governor O\u2019Malley has supported the <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em\" href=\"http:\/\/buy-local-challenge.com\/\">Buy Local Challenge<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\"> throughout his administration and began hosting the cookout during his second year in office. This will be his seventh \u2013 and final \u2013 year hosting the cookout, which will be held at Government House on Thursday, July 24.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cKatie and I have very much enjoyed hosting the Buy Local Cookout, not only because it\u2019s a delicious event, but because it brings attention to the importance of supporting our family farmers and eating fresh, local food that\u2019s good for you,\u201d said Governor O\u2019Malley. \u201cBuying local also helps us strengthen local economies by creating more jobs and promoting a greener, more sustainable Maryland. This event has been a highlight of my year for seven years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Governor O\u2019Malley invited teams of chefs and producers to submit original recipes that highlight the diversity of local products. Some 28 recipes were submitted; and 16 were selected. Government House chefs will also provide an appetizer for the cookout.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All recipe submissions will be published in the <i>2014 Buy Local Cookout Recipes, <\/i>which will include wine pairing recommendations from the <a href=\"http:\/\/marylandwine.com\/\">Maryland Wineries Association<\/a>.
