Maryland State Chemist Improves Consumer Protection with Online Product Registration Portal

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) recently launched the State Chemist Product Registration portal that allows manufacturers to electronically submit registration renewals and applications for products that are required to be registered in the state of Maryland.

MDA State Chemist has been in continuous operation since 1833, responsible for regulating the sale and distribution of pesticides, animal feeds, pet foods, fertilizers, compost, soil conditioners and agricultural liming materials. The mission is to enhance and promote agricultural production; protect consumers, animals and the environment from unsafe products.

“We’ve put a lot of work into creating a system that makes product registration and renewal simpler,” said MDA State Chemist Program Manager Tom Phillips. “We hope that our customers will find the tools offered effective and convenient.”

Prior to the launch of the online platform, new manufacturers registered manually by downloading non-fillable forms. Registered manufacturers were sent paper copies of renewals for specific products based on what was registered the previous year.

Companies registered more than 2,767 products through the portal in the first week of the service going live.  The user-friendly design and time saving portal offers manufacturers the ability to:

  • Register and pay for multiple products at once
  • Manage registered products on demand
  • Print registration certificate upon registration or anytime thereafter
  • Access to the portal 24/7
  • Pay with credit card or eCheck/ACH

Currently, the State Chemist Product Registration portal accepts registration and renewals for pesticide products with other regulated products being added continuously. The service can be accessed by visiting  https://egov.maryland.gov/mda/chemist .

The State Chemist Product Registration portal was developed for the state of Maryland at no cost by NIC Maryland, through a statewide self-funded digital government master services agreement with the State Department of Information Technology (DoIT).
