State Agriculture Agency and Agriculture Education Foundation Offer Workshops for Farms Working with School Groups
ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) and the Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation (MAEF) will be conducting a series of farm-based education workshops throughout March. Please see below for more information on cost and registration.
- March 3 cancelled due to weather. New Date: April 7 – Fox Haven Farm, Jefferson, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Farm-Based Education: Curriculum and Collaboration. Take a tour of the working educational farm near Frederick. Participate in a model lesson about the American chestnut at the farm’s own experimental plot. The afternoon will include training in curriculum standards and designing K-12 lessons to use with students visiting your farm, Farm-to-School, and much more. Cost: $17 with lunch; $10 without lunch. - March 11 – Montpelier Farms, Upper Marlboro, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Farm-Based Education Management: Students to Stats. Take a tour and learn how this working farm incorporates agricultural education through dedicated programs and events, farmer’s market, and a fun destination for families. Share engaging lessons and ideas for K-12 on-farm education, and learn how to keep program records and logs that contain useful information for growing future capacity. We’ll review any standards updates and how Maryland’s Environmental Literacy initiative is advancing farm-based education. Cost: $10. Register here.
- March 26 – Maryland Agricultural Resource Center, Cockeysville, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Farm-Based Education: Curriculum and Collaboration. Take a tour of the grounds; meet the educators, and share experiences and ideas that make on-farm agriculture education so much fun. Presentations by experienced farm-based educators will help lay a path for understanding and negotiating the challenges of working with larger school systems. The afternoon will include training in curriculum standards and designing K-12 lessons to use with students visiting your farm, Farm-to-School, and much more. Cost: $17 with lunch; $10 without lunch.
