Lt. Governor, State Ag Secretary to Visit Berlin Creamery Tomorrow on Maryland’s Best Ice Cream Trail
ANNAPOLIS, MD – In celebration of Maryland’s ice cream trail, Lt. Governor Anthony Brown and Maryland Agriculture Secretary Buddy Hance will visit Chesapeake Bay Farms tomorrow to encourage all Marylanders to enjoy fresh, delicious ice cream. The Maryland’s Best Ice Cream Trail includes eight farms that stretch over more than 290 miles from Ocean City in the east to Washington County in the west. Under the program, people pick up an Ice Cream Trail Passport at any of the eight creameries (or online), answer a question and have it “stamped” at each creamery. Those who submit a completed passport to MDA before September 16 will be entered in a drawing for the grand prize, which includes a $50 gift certificate to the winner’s favorite creamery.
Who/What:
Lt. Governor Brown and Secretary Hance will visit a Worcester County farm-based creamery that is on the “Maryland’s Best Ice Cream Trail.”
Why:
To highlight the important contributions of Maryland’s 496 dairy farms which accounted for $188 million in sales in 2012; and to increase the public’s general understanding of dairy farming by encouraging them to visit a farm and see what dairy farming is really like, all while enjoying delicious, locally-produced ice cream.
Where/Where:
Wednesday, August 14 from 1:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Chesapeake Bay Farms, Inc., 8905 Logtown Road, Berlin (Worcester County)
Note to Reporters:
- Secretary Hance visited Kilby Cream (Cecil Co.) on May 22 and Broom’s Bloom (Harford Co.) on July 23. He will visit Prigel Family Creamery (Baltimore Co.) on August 19; Misty Meadows Farm Creamery (Washington Co.) and Rocky Point Creamery (Frederick Co.) on August 20; and Keyes Creamery (Harford Co.) and South Mountain Creamery (Frederick) on August 24.
- Several dairies in the state produce ice cream on farm but do not sell it directly to consumers on the farm. Those sites are not included in the Maryland’s Best Ice Cream Trail.
- Photos will be available after the event by contacting MDA.
