MARYLAND SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE BUDDY HANCE TO ATTEND SAVOR ST. MARY’S RESTAURANT WEEK

Secretary to Promote Local Agriculture by Attending Leonardtown Dinner and Winery Tour

ANNAPOLIS, MD (July 28, 2010) – Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Buddy Hance will attend on Friday night a dinner and winery tour as part of Savor St. Mary’s Restaurant Week. The dinner will be at Kevin Thompson’s Corner Kafe, a participant in St. Mary’s County Restaurant Week, and will feature local rockfish, squash casserole, and salad bar. After the dinner, Secretary Hance will tour the Port of Leonardtown Winery. Members of the media are invited to the no-host dinner and the winery tour as Secretary Hance discusses the state of agriculture during summer 2010 with local farmers. The dinner will take place this Friday at 6 p.m. at Kevin Thompson’s Corner Kafe in Leonardtown and the winery tour will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Port of Leonardtown Winery.

Savor St. Mary’s Restaurant Week is July 25 through August 8. It promotes local agriculture and restaurants that buy products from local farmers. All monetary contributions generated through the Restaurant Week will go to support two local soup kitchens. In addition to Savor St. Mary’s Restaurant Week, Secretary Hance has promoted local agriculture and restaurants that “buy local” by attending the kickoff for the Howard County Farm-2-Table Restaurant Weeks (July 26-August 8). He will also attend the Baltimore Summer Restaurant Week (August 13-22). Buying locally is key to ensuring a smart, green and growing future for Maryland families. It preserves farmland, protects the environment, bolsters local economies, and provides wholesome, nutritious, great-tasting fresh food.
