Ready, Set Summer!

Stop at a Roadside Stand or Farmer’s Market along Your Vacation Route

ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 22, 2010) – As you pack up your gear to visit to beautiful mountains of Western Maryland and the sunny shores of Maryland and Delaware beaches, be sure to save room in your car for some delicious, fresh Maryland fruits and vegetables.  Whether you are going to the beach, the mountains or places in between, there are dozens of farm stands along your route.  Right now, local berries, cherries, greens, beans, squash and more are in season.

“What better way to enjoy a warm summer day or to prepare yourself for a relaxing vacation with cool ocean breezes or fresh mountain air than by trying some delicious home-made ice cream and farm-fresh local produce from a farm stand on the way to your vacation destination,” said Agriculture Secretary Buddy Hance. “You’ll have the added satisfaction of knowing that you are supporting local farmers who in turn can keep our beautiful land open and productive.”

Maryland’s Best, a branding program for Maryland-grown and –made products, has put together a map of farm stands along various vacation routes to the beach and the mountains.  Most stands are located within five miles of the major highways, and right now there are over 70 markets to choose from. Beach goers can also try traveling along some of the more interesting country roads where smaller farm stands can often be found.
