Education and the Environment: 2010 Maryland Envirothon
Winning Teams from Maryland Counties to Compete June 24-25, 2010
Who:
While most students are enjoying summer vacation, more than 100 of Maryland’s brightest teenagers will be competing at the 20th annual Maryland Envirothon, a rigorous two-day, hands-on natural resources competition for high school students interested in learning about environmental issues and the outdoors. Teams that won county level competitions are competing for state honors: Allegany, Allegany High School; Anne Arundel, South River High School; Baltimore County, Hereford High School; Baltimore City, Western High School; Calvert County, Calvert High School; Carroll, Boy Scout Venturing Crew 202; Caroline County, Colonel Richardson High School; Cecil County, The Tome School; Charles County, La Plata High School; Dorchester County, Cambridge South Dorchester High School; Frederick County, Catoctin High School; Garrett County, Northern Garret High School; Harford County, Harford Christian School; Howard County, Wilde Lake High School; Montgomery County, Montgomery Blair High School; Prince George’s County, Oxon Hill High School; St. Mary’s County, Leonardtown High School; Talbot County, Sts. Peter and Paul High School; Washington County, Clear Spring High School; Worcester County, Pocomoke High School.
What:
Students taking part in the Maryland Envirothon have been studying the state’s natural resources for the past year. In written tests, five member teams demonstrate their knowledge of soils, forestry, aquatics, wildlife, and this year’s special environmental issue: Protection of Groundwater through Urban, Agricultural and Environmental Planning. Teamwork and problem solving skills are evaluated by natural resource professionals. The winner of the Maryland Envirothon represents the state at the Canon Envirothon, North America’s largest outdoor environmental competition.

Directions: From points north: Take US Route 301 south past Upper Marlboro. Turn left on Route 381, Brandywine Road. Continue east through the town of Brandywine. Brandywine Road turns into Aquasco Road. Continue on Aquasco Road past Horsehead Road and turn right immediately after the Schmidt Education Center (it looks like a school). Follow signs to the Maryland Envirothon.
