Ag Secretary Visits Miller’s Farm during Governor O’Malley’s ‘A Capital for a Day’

Farm Includes DC-area Produce Market, Bakery, Nursery, Agri-tourism; Farm-to-School and Gleaning Participant

CLINTON, MD (April 16, 2010) – Agriculture Secretary Buddy Hance visited Miller’s Farm in Clinton yesterday for an informal discussion of current agricultural subjects and issues and to learn more about the Miller Family’s operation.  The visit is part of Governor Martin O’Malley’s Capital for a Day celebration being held in Capitol Heights the same day.

During his visit, Secretary Hance talked with Phil Miller, about his farm’s diversification to meet consumer demand.  They discussed the Miller’s participation in the Maryland Farm to School program, expansion of their operation to include a nursery, bakery and ice cream shop and their gleaning activities.

“I enjoyed visiting Miller’s Farm and learning more about their historic operation that has expanded in response to consumer demand for buying locally direct from farmers and getting a taste of what farm life is all about,” said Secretary Hance.  “We thank Phil Miller and Miller’s Farm for hosting us and look forward to a great spring and summer growing season for Maryland agriculture.”

Established in 1840, Miller Farms is one of Maryland’s oldest family run working farms centrally located in the Washington, DC area.  In 1964, the Miller family opened a small market to sell produce grown on their farm.  In the late 1970’s, the family expanded the operation to include pick your own produce and tailgate markets.  In 2007, the operation expanded to include a bakery and ice cream shop and they also operate a nursery.
