The Farm Museum is conducting it’s yearly statewide contest for a design to be featured at the 30th annual Maryland Wine Festival, but this year the age range has been widened to include a much younger crowd.
New to this year, applicants need only be 18 instead of 21. According to Museum Administrator Dottie Freeman, this was done in order to appeal to a wider audience of younger artists that may still be in art school or college. As was the case with last year, all applicants are still required to be a resident of Maryland.
Freeman made it clear that she was excited about the fresh perspectives that would be brought in with this rule change.
Events Coordinator Bonnie Hood said she was excited to continue the tradition of finding an outside artist to create the festival’s design, noting the abundance of new ideas and their overall goal of working closely with the general public.
Freeman says there is also a sense that awarding a local artist the opportunity for their art to be on display at such a prominent event will help them network. This year the museum is looking for a design that incorporates the landmark 30th anniversary of the festival.
The winner of the competition will receive a $1,000 cash prize, two free passes to the festival and their design featured on all 2013 Maryland Wine Festival memorabilia and promotional materials. Five runners up will also be selected, and each one will receive two free tickets to the festival.
The contest will be judged by an independent panel of judges selected by the Farm Museum. According to Farm Museum Curator Victoria Fowler, the museum received 28 entries last year, and this year they are looking to increase that number by 10 or 15 with the age changes.
All entries must be original designs, and there are no limitations on what two dimensional medium can be used.
All applicants must deliver their entry in person or by mail in a self addressed number 10 envelope to the Farm Museum located at 500 South Center Street, Westminster MD, 21157. Entries must be received at the Farm Museum by 3 p.m, Friday, March 15. Mailed entries must be postmarked by that date. Late entries will not be considered.
The exact specifications for the posters, rules to the contest, and the contest entry form can be downloaded from the Farm Museum’s website, www.carrollcountyfarmmuseum.org. Applicants can also contact the museum directly at 410-386-3880 or visit in person.
For those who wish to attend the Maryland Wine Festival this year, it will take place on Sept. 21 and 22 at the Carroll County Farm Museum. More information, and a showcase of previous years winners artwork is available at the Maryland Wine Festival website, www.marylandwinefestival.org.
