Department Names Cassie Shirk as Director of Legislation and Government Affairs
ANNAPOLIS, MD – Agriculture Secretary Joe Bartenfelder has named Cassie Shirk the Director of Legislation and Government Affairs, effective December 5.
Shirk joins the department from the Maryland Governor’s Office where she most recently served as a policy advisor. Previously, she served in the Maryland Governor’s Legislative Office as a Special Assistant to the Chief Legislative Officer and in the Maryland Governor’s Office for Children as a Legislative Liaison. Before working in Maryland, Shirk served her home state of Pennsylvania as a Legislative Specialist in the Department of Education and in several other roles within the Pennsylvania Governor’s Office.
As Director of Legislation and Government Affairs, Shirk will be responsible for all aspects of the Agriculture Department’s state, local and federal legislative activities. Shirk will play a critical role in representing the department during the Maryland General Assembly’s upcoming legislative session. She will also staff the Governor’s Intergovernmental Commission for Agriculture, an interagency policy group that helps to promote and protect Maryland’s agriculture through addressing policy and regulatory matters.
Shirk received her bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting and minored in Political Science from Point Park University in Pittsburgh.
