Survey Says Maryland Farmers’ Markets Boost Local Economy
ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Maryland Department of Agriculture and the Maryland Farmers Market Association estimate that local farmers’ markets generated $51 million dollars in sales, with more than 2.3 million consumers visiting farmers’ markets in 2015. This data is based on a survey completed by 29 percent of the 141 farmers’ markets in the state. This confidential survey is the first of its kind completed in Maryland.
“As the farmers’ market season begins, Maryland farmers are ready to offer a variety of fresh, quality products at local markets throughout the state,” said Secretary of Agriculture Joe Bartenfelder. “Farmers’ markets have become an important source of income for our local farmers, and we have seen a major increase in demand for fresh, locally grown produce, meats, dairy and more.”
The growing consumer demand for buying locally grown products at farmers’ markets is evident at the state and national level. Since the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service began tracking farmers’ markets in 1994, the number of markets in the United States has grown from 1,755 to 8,144 as of 2013. Total annual sales at U.S. farmers’ markets are now estimated at $1 billion.
