New Episode of Maryland Public TV series Maryland Farm & Harvest Airs Jan. 12

ANNAPOLIS, MD  – Maryland Public Television’s (MPT) popular original series Maryland Farm & Harvest is now in its third season with new half-hour episodes airing Tuesdays at 7 p.m. The series puts a human face on Maryland agriculture by telling stories of the people, skills and technology required to sustain and grow the state’s number one industry.

Featured on the program on Tuesday, January 12 at 7 p.m. are:

  • Harding’s Ginseng Farm in Friendsville. For thousands of years, wild ginseng root has been highly prized in Chinese folk medicine – so much so that the plant has been picked to near extinction in China.  Ginseng, however, is still in great supply in the mountainous regions of western Maryland. During this segment Farmer Larry Harding teaches host Joanne Clendining about the many benefits of ginseng.
  • Hetrick Farms in Preston. Seventeen-year-old Jamie Hetrick plans to take over the family hay business after college. In the meantime, she’s studying about the different types of hay because, as she explains, “every horse is different, just like every person is different.” Host Joanne Clendining learns more about benefits and uses for different types of hay.
  • Cohoke Farms in Charles County. Hungry birds are a threat to the farm’s milo crop, which is ironic since this grain is being raised for birdseed. Host Joanne Clendining follows the farmers as they take the harvest from field to factory.
  • The Local Buy: At Even’Star Organic Farm in St. Mary’s County, Al Spoler learns that it’s possible to grow greens outside in the winter. In fact, Al finds out from this Lexington Park farmer that the cold weather can actually make them sweeter.

A preview and additional information about the episode is available online at www.mpt.org/farm.

Joanne Clendining, who earned an Emmy® from the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter (NCCBC) of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for her work as Maryland Farm & Harvest host, returns for season three.  Joining Joanne is Contributing Editor Al Spoler, who serves up the Local Buy segment during each episode.

During its first two seasons Maryland Farm & Harvest has been nominated for five Emmy awards from the NCCBC of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. https://youtu.be/dgr-0cnrbTg
