Agriculture Secretary to Read to Third Graders at Mutual Elementary School

Secretary Hance to Promote ‘A Read Across Maryland’ Reading Campaign

ANNAPOLIS, MD (March 22, 2010) – Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary and Calvert County native Buddy Hance will read to third graders at Mutual Elementary School as part of “Read Across Maryland” month, and will encourage participation in the “30 for 30” reading campaign.

The celebration and reading will take place Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 8:30 a.m. at Mutual Elementary School in Port Republic (Calvert County).

On March 1, 2010, Governor O’Malley kicked off the second annual “Read Across Maryland” initiative, alongside Maryland State Education Association (MSEA) President Clara Floyd.  This year, the program has expanded to include a partnership with the Maryland Library Association, with a theme of “30 for 30,” a challenge to parents, teachers, and students to read 30 minutes every day for 30 days for the month of March.   The Governor, Lt. Governor, First Lady and members of his cabinet are joining MSEA leaders for classroom visits and reading assemblies at select schools across the state during the month of March.
