Do students have a say in the State Legislature?

    The Scales of Justice

The MCSS Student Focus Group remains strong in our efforts to become educated in numerous school safety topics and to disperse information back to the counties.

This past January, Dawn Leudtke, Assistant Attorney General and Counsel to MCSS, attended the MCSS Student Focus group general meeting as a guest speaker. It was a very informative discussion on what her role is in the Maryland General Assembly and legislative processes. It was truly enlightening to hear her speak, and we as the Student Focus Group, are certainly proud that she is someone who works for the state of Maryland.

In addition, Mrs. Leudtke shared her work regarding legislation for the State. For further context in how she got started, Mrs. Ledutke began with an internship for a Congressperson in her area which inspired her to go to college to study law. She worked as a lawyer for a while and then decided to pursue her current position.

One of the most important things about the Maryland General Assembly is that no matter what age you are, you can testify for pending bills. This is very important to our MCSS Student Focus Group, because we can impact future Maryland laws. So yes, the students in Maryland do have a say in what bills can be passed. The assembly lasts a couple more weeks, and we are excited to see how it all concludes.

The Student Focus group remains hard at work and will continue to learn about important topics such as this. We look forward to learning more over the coming months!
