The facility, which sells and services power boats, earned the award after taking steps to prevent pollution for more sustainable operations.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have lived in Maryland 49 years, enjoyed our bay recreationally and professionally, and have made my living by serving our boating community in many ways,\u201d said owner John Wieslander. \u201cNow, more than ever, I recognize just how important the Chesapeake Bay is to me and the people of Maryland. She is our economic engine, a source of recreation, jobs, and most importantly, is the foundation for our way of life as Marylanders. Please do what you can, even in the smallest way to protect her, reclaim her and help ensure her viability for future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kent Island Marine Services is unique in the industry because it\u2019s not on the water. Boats are brought in on trailers for service and most repair work is done indoors, in a controlled setting with appropriate pollution controls. They recycle batteries, scrap metal and used oil; properly dispose of solvents and other hazardous materials; and ensure spill response materials are on standby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertifying a land-based facility is new for us, but they take the same steps as other Clean Marinas to reduce pollution and protect the environment,\u201d said Program Manager Donna Morrow. \u201cWe\u2019re pleased to include this segment of the boat service industry to the program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are now 156 Maryland Clean Marina certified facilities statewide that have voluntarily adopted a significant portion of recommendations from the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr2.maryland.gov\/boating\/Pages\/cleanmarina\/cmprogram.aspx#guidebook\" target=\"_blank\">Clean Marina Guidebook<\/a> and passed rigorous site inspections. DNR re-inspects the facilities every three years.<\/p>\n<p>DNR oversees the Clean Marina Initiative, a voluntary program that promotes and celebrates the efforts of any-sized marina, boatyard or yacht club to reduce their pollution.
