Maryland DNR photo by Maggie Cavey.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> awarded competitive grants for nine flood reduction and restoration projects to help communities plan and design solutions to withstand flooding and other weather-related events.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The selected projects will reduce risk for vulnerable communities, incorporate changing environmental conditions into existing plans and policies, and develop nature-based or natural solutions to help manage flooding and erosion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Funding is provided by the state\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/ccs\/Pages\/Resilience-through-Restoration.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Resilience Through Restoration Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Following eight years as a pilot program, the Resilience through Restoration Initiative was successfully <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2026\/02\/11\/resilience-through-restoration-initiative-protects-maryland-communities-and-coastlines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">codified<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> through 2026 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mgaleg.maryland.gov\/mgawebsite\/Legislation\/Details\/Hb0254\/?ys=2026rs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">legislation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, transforming it into a permanent fixture for protecting communities from flooding, erosion and storm events.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Grant funding for Fiscal Year 2027 is awarded to the following local governments and community partners, pending final approval by federal partners:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Anne Arundel County:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>The Resilience Authority of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To design a living shoreline in Crownsville that protects the adjacent tidal marsh and flood vulnerable River Road while preserving and enhancing bird habitat.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Reverend Samuel Green Sr. Foundation \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To design a living shoreline in Annapolis along Martins Cove that protects existing and planned trails reconnecting two historic African American communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Cecil County:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Cecil County <\/b><b>\u2013<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To launch a public outreach initiative focused on flooding that includes educating property owners, increasing flood reporting on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mycoast.org\/md\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MyCoast Maryland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and gathering essential data to earn credits under the Community Rating System<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of the National Flood Insurance Program.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Dorchester County:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Dorchester County \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> To d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">esign a living shoreline that protects adjacent wetlands and access to a county marina and public boat ramp on Elliott Island.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Harford County:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>City of Havre de Grace <\/b><b>\u2013<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To design a submerged gravel wetland and offline wetland along Lilly Run to mitigate nuisance stormwater overflow and flooding.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Howard County:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Howard County \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To design a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">stormwater detention pond retrofit with bioswales and concrete channel removal at St. Peter\u2019s Episcopal Church in Old Ellicott City to reduce flood risk associated with storm system overflows.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Prince George\u2019s County:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>City of Hyattsville \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To design innovative right-of-way green infrastructure stormwater practices along Kennedy Street to reduce neighborhood flooding and pilot hybrid approaches to localized flood mitigation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Town of Berwyn Heights \u2013<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To develop a flood preparedness and mitigation plan to address vulnerable properties, critical assets, and infrastructure, recommend green infrastructure interventions, and provide a framework for future investments.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Somerset County:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>City of Crisfield \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To design a tidal wetland restoration project in southern Crisfield that reduces tidal and stormwater flooding along South Somerset Avenue and Woodson School Road.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Beginning in mid-July, the Department of Natural Resources will accept applications for the next fiscal year through the department\u2019s <\/span><a
