Photo by Sam Crane, Maryland Department of Natural Resources.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since 2021, Maryland\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/five-million-tree-tracking-tool-maryland.hub.arcgis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5 Million Trees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> program partners and supporters have planted more than 1.5 million native trees across the state. While significant, 3.5 million more trees must be planted to reach the state\u2019s ambitious goal of planting 5 million trees by 2031. Marylanders can play a direct role in closing that gap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marylanders can join the effort by planting and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/five-million-tree-tracking-tool-maryland.hub.arcgis.com\/pages\/register-trees-survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">registering<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">trees. Interested individuals can participate through available <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/five-million-tree-tracking-tool-maryland.hub.arcgis.com\/pages\/39ad904caa6e40459ed5582ae18f3222\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">programs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for landowners and communities, partner with a local tree planting specialist to initiate a project, or work with a forester for technical assistance.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTrees help fight climate change, absorb carbon, provide clean oxygen, and improve air quality in urban and rural areas,\u201d said Isaac Whitmore, 5 Million Trees program coordinator for the Maryland Forest Service. \u201cThey also reduce urban heat, support wildlife habitat, and improve water quality in local waterways and the Chesapeake Bay.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>When to Plant<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spring is a great time to plant trees as it gives young trees a strong start during the growing season. As temperatures warm and daylight increases, trees begin actively growing roots and leaves, which helps them establish quickly. Spring typically brings more consistent rainfall, reducing the need for frequent watering. Fall can also be a good time as cooler temperatures reduce stress on the tree while still allowing roots to grow in warm soil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/5MT-logo-green.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-47061\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/5MT-logo-green-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"Five Million Trees for Maryland logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/5MT-logo-green-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/5MT-logo-green-1024x698.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/5MT-logo-green-768x524.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/5MT-logo-green.jpg 1082w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>What Trees Count<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To count toward the 5 Million Trees goal, plantings must meet the following criteria:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have been planted after July 1, 2021. Past plantings may be registered. For large-scale plantings, Marylanders can contact Isaac Whitmore at <\/span><a href=\"mailto:isaac.whitmore@maryland.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">isaac.whitmore@maryland.gov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for assistance to register trees.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Support afforestation, which means in areas where tree cover has historically been absent.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be native to Maryland. This includes more than 60 species, most of which are included on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mde.maryland.gov\/programs\/air\/Climate-in-md\/Documents\/5%20Million%20Trees\/Native%20Tree%20Species.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">recommended tree list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At least 10% of the trees must be planted in urban underserved areas as defined by Maryland\u2019s Tree Solutions Now Act of 2021. The program prioritizes planting in urban underserved areas, including neighborhoods that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Were redlined or graded as hazardous by the Home Owner\u2019s Loan Corporation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have an unemployment rate higher than the state average.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have a median household income at or below 75% of the state\u2019s average.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Are located within a housing project.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marylanders can access an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/maryland.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/webappviewer\/index.html?id=4258d3e39f6a47fca146b854c0f01e31&amp;arcgis-auth-origin=https%3A%2F%2Ffive-million-tree-tracking-tool-maryland.hub.arcgis.com&amp;arcgis-auth-portal=https%3A%2F%2Fmaryland.maps.arcgis.com%2Fsharing%2Frest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">interactive map<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to see the qualifying urban underserved areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When in doubt, Marylanders can contact their local <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/five-million-tree-tracking-tool-maryland.hub.arcgis.com\/pages\/39ad904caa6e40459ed5582ae18f3222\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tree planting specialist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to see if their project qualifies for the 5 Million Trees count. The Maryland Forest Service is available to assist both public and private landowners interested in tree planting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Numerous programs exist for anyone looking to join the initiative:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ways to Get Involved in Urban Areas<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Everyone can take advantage of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/pages\/marylandersplanttrees\/introduction.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marylanders Plant Trees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> coupons, which give $25 off a purchase of a tree valued at $50 or more from participating nurseries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Maryland Forest Service <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/treemendous\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tree-Mendous Maryland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> program is aimed at helping citizens restore tree cover on public land and community open space in Maryland.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Chesapeake Bay Trust\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cbtrust.org\/grants\/urban-trees-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Urban Trees Award Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> provides grants to fund tree planting projects in urban, underserved areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/pages\/programs\/urban\/mcfc.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Urban and Community Forestry Council<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> provides grants for community groups to fund tree planting and education projects in Maryland\u2019s urban forests. The committee also provides funding for MDOT Transportation Reforestation Grants\u200b that support tree replanting in areas where canopy was lost due to transportation infrastructure projects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/programs\/Backyard-Buffer-Program-Contacts.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Backyard Buffer Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> provides free seedlings for homeowners to grow native tree and shrub buffers to protect streams and waterways.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Support Available for Rural Landowners<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allianceforthebay.org\/project\/healthy-forests-healthy-waters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Healthy Forest, Healthy Waters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a partnership between the Maryland Forest Service and the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, which provides technical assistance to public and private landowners. Afforestation projects of one acre or more include three years of maintenance and are free to the landowner.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Forest Stewardship Assistance offers technical and financial support for landowners to manage and care for their forests. Forest stewards will assist landowners to take advantage of programs such as\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/programapps\/costshareprograms.aspx#wip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Woodland Incentive Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which provides financial assistance for private, non-industrial woodland owners with 5 to 1,000 acres.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcs.usda.gov\/programs-initiatives\/eqip-environmental-quality-incentives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Environmental Quality Incentives Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a multi-agency program assisting landowners in improving agricultural and woodland practices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/habitat\/milo.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which supports forest buffers and wetlands on farmland to protect wildlife and improve water quality.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kentsoilandwaterconservationdistrict.org\/programs\/maryland-department-of-agriculture-programs\/maryland-agricultural-water-quality-cost-share-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Agricultural Water Quality Cost-Share Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> offers farmers grants covering up to 100% of the cost to install best management practices that prevent erosion, manage nutrients, and protect water quality.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mda.maryland.gov\/resource_conservation\/Pages\/conservation-buffer-initiative.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland&#8217;s Conservation Buffer Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> provides farmers with incentive payments to plant streamside buffers on farmland to improve the health of local streams and the Chesapeake Bay.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wmrcd.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Western Maryland Resource Conservation and Development Council<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> builds and sustains resource conservation programs that raise the quality of social, economic, and environmental development in Garrett, Allegany, Washington, and Frederick counties.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To track progress of the 5 Million Trees initiative, citizens can visit the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/five-million-tree-tracking-tool-maryland.hub.arcgis.com\/pages\/progress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">program website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or follow DNR on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MarylandDNR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Facebook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since 2021, Maryland\u2019s 5 Million Trees program partners and supporters have planted more than 1.5 million native trees across the state.
