{"id":46187,"date":"2025-11-12T12:32:36","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T17:32:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=46187"},"modified":"2025-11-12T12:32:36","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T17:32:36","slug":"marylands-deer-firearms-season-opens-nov-29","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2025\/11\/12\/marylands-deer-firearms-season-opens-nov-29\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland\u2019s Deer Firearms Season Opens Nov. 29"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Popular deer hunting season provides quality time outdoors with friends and family<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 431px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8560\/30092889605_7c3490e382.jpg\" alt=\"Deer in a field during autumn\" width=\"421\" height=\"281\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Duane Tucker, submitted to 2016 Maryland DNR Photo Contest.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland\u2019s two-week firearms hunting season for sika and white-tailed deer opens Saturday, Nov. 29 and runs through Saturday, Dec. 13.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The two-week season includes the opportunity to hunt on certain\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/huntersguide\/Documents\/SundayDeerHuntingCalendar.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sundays<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0in all but three counties, affording hunters more weekend opportunities to hunt and contribute to managing Maryland\u2019s deer population.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The two-week firearms season is fast approaching and Maryland hunters are preparing for opening day<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8216;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Wildlife\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wildlife and Heritage Service<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Director Karina Stonesifer said. \u201cAs part of the hunting heritage for many families, the firearms season is by far the most popular deer hunting season in the state. For many new hunters, this is the first exposure they have to deer hunting, deer management, and the feeling of putting fresh venison on the table for their families<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bag limits and antlerless season dates for the firearm season, along with other deer hunting seasons and regulations, are available in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/huntersguide\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2025-2026 Maryland Guide to Hunting and Trapping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hunters who intend to pursue sika deer, must purchase a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eregulations.com\/maryland\/hunting\/hunting-licenses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sika hunting stamp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Sika stamps, along with hunting licenses, may be purchased online through\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/compass.dnr.maryland.gov\/dnrcompassportal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the MD Outdoors licensing website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, at a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/service_agents.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">licensing agent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, or by calling\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/pages\/licensing.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">DNR Licensing and Registration Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0at 866-344-8889.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hunters are also reminded that an antler-point restriction remains in effect. Deer hunters may harvest one antlered white-tailed deer within the yearly bag limit that does not meet the requirement of having at least three points on one antler. Any additional antlered deer taken within the established bag limit must meet the minimum point restriction. Licensed junior hunters and apprentice license holders, 16 years of age or younger, are exempt from this restriction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hunters should also be aware that the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eregulations.com\/maryland\/hunting\/chronic-wasting-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chronic Wasting Disease Management Area expanded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0earlier this year\u00a0and now includes all of Allegany, Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery, and Washington counties. Hunters cannot transport whole carcasses or certain parts of deer harvested from within the management area to locations outside of its boundaries unless meeting certain\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/hunt_trap\/CWD_in_Maryland.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">exceptions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0Research suggests\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/hunt_trap\/CWD_in_Maryland.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">chronic wasting disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is not naturally transmitted to humans. However, as a general safety precaution it is recommended that hunters avoid consuming the meat of sick animals as well as the brain, lymph nodes, or\u00a0spinal column of any deer \u2013 all of which are normally removed during the butchering process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During firearms season, Maryland requires deer hunters and their companions to wear daylight\u00a0fluorescent orange or daylight fluorescent pink in one of the following manners: a cap of solid\u00a0fluorescent daylight orange or pink, a vest or jacket containing back and front panels of at least 250 square inches of fluorescent daylight orange or pink, or an outer garment of camouflage daylight fluorescent orange or pink worn above the waist and containing at least 50 percent daylight fluorescent color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hunters should carefully inspect all\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/nrp\/Pages\/treestand_tips.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tree stands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0and always wear a full-body safety harness while in the stand and while climbing in or out. The department strongly recommends using a sliding knot, commonly known as a prusik knot, attached to a line that is secured above the stand that allows the hunter to be safely tethered to the tree as soon as they leave the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hunters are encouraged to help others by donating deer taken in Maryland. A state tax credit offers hunters an incentive for donated deer.
