Photo by Josh Montgomery, winning entry in Maryland DNR’s 2025 waterfowl photo contest.<\/p><\/div>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><\/a> (DNR) selected Josh Montgomery as the winner of the Inaugural DNR Waterfowl Photo Contest, with his image of his retriever carrying a canvasback duck. This image will be available on a new hard-card license offered through the <\/span>MD Outdoors<\/span><\/a> licensing and registration system, and on the <\/span>DNR 2026 Maryland Natural Resource Calendar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCongratulations to our winner and all participants. We had a fantastic group of entries depicting many scenes and species,\u201d <\/span>Wildlife and Heritage Service<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Director Karina Stonesifer said. \u201cThis iconic image is a great way to introduce our new licensing system and the hard cards that are available for collection.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Montgomery captured this photo in Anne Arundel County while out hunting with his trusted companion, River.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Hunting is my passion and I enjoy sharing it through the camera,\u201d <\/span>Montgomery said.<\/span> \u201cIn the moment I was able to capture River happily doing her job retrieving bird after bird from the icy waters and one epic experience that we won’t soon forget<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>

\n<\/span>Montgomery\u2019s photo was selected following a first-ever Maryland DNR waterfowl photo contest earlier this year; for the next season and going forward, waterfowl photos will be part of <\/span>DNR\u2019s annual photo contest<\/span><\/a> and the images will be chosen along with the other photo contest winners each fall. The DNR Photo Contest is <\/span>accepting entries until August 1<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Holders of Maryland hunting and fishing licenses can purchase a collectible, limited edition card that <\/span>serves as a durable hard copy of their license (featuring <\/span>this and other images)<\/span> at <\/span>MD Outdoors<\/span><\/a>. The 2026 calendar that will include this image will be available for purchase in fall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Maryland hunters and anglers can purchase their licenses online at <\/span>MD Outdoors<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>at <\/span>DNR service centers<\/span><\/a>, or at <\/span>sport license agent retailers<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
