Maryland DNR photo.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whether someone is just dipping a line for the first time or ready to jump back into the hobby of fishing, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) offers the chance to enjoy the thrill of a catch without spending a lot of money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Licensing fees directly fund DNR&#8217;s important conservation work \u2013 the department monitors the health of fish, crab, and shellfish populations, tackles invasive species, protects habitats, and more using those dedicated funds from anglers. Additionally, purchases of fishing tackle, boats, and marine fuel contribute to sportfishing sustainability and access through federal excise taxes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But recognizing the importance of getting more people involved in fishing &#8211; whether they\u2019ve never tried it before or gave it up years ago and want to get back into it \u2013 DNR provides numerous opportunities to fish for free or borrow gear.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Below are seven ideas for low to no-cost fishing in Maryland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 385px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/379\/18655652851_db380ac6cb.jpg\" alt=\"A woman and girl fishing off a bridge\" width=\"375\" height=\"281\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maryland DNR photo<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Enjoy Maryland\u2019s free fishing days:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Three times a year, everyone can fish Maryland waters without a license. The state&#8217;s free fishing days are the first two Saturdays in June \u2013 this year June 7 and June 14 \u2013 and again on July 4. If you&#8217;re a license holder, it&#8217;s a perfect time to introduce a friend or family member to fishing without any upfront cost, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/service_fishing_license.aspx#ARR\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">free registration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is required for those fishing tidal or saltwater<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Head to a license-free fishing area:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland offers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Pages\/license-free.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">25 license-free fishing areas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013 from Gambrill State Park to Ocean City and North East to Crisfield \u2013 where anyone fish year-round without purchasing a license. Most do require anglers to complete a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/service_fishing_license.aspx#ARR\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">free saltwater registration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u200b and Maryland fishing rules must be observed. Treat it like a free trial, or use these areas exclusively\u2014there\u2019s no limit to this opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Encourage the next generation of anglers<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The smile on a child\u2019s face when they reel in a fish is the perfect reminder of why the sport is so beloved. Introducing a young person to fishing is rewarding, and anglers under 16 years old do not need to purchase a fishing license. DNR partners with local organizations to host youth fishing rodeos from April through October. Many of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Pages\/youth\/rodeo_list.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 51 family friendly competitions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and events offered in 2025 are free to attend. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdf215wa4-9Sr46haiAw7w7zco7G0ClXp2cf6QEd0btxsRCAA\/viewform?c=0&amp;w=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Youth Fishing Club<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is another no-cost way to get youngsters excited about fishing. The DNR <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/ccs\/Pages\/tackle-loaner-program-locations.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tackle loaner program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is here to lend you a hand, or more accurately, lend you a rod. Twenty-five locations across Maryland, including state parks and public libraries, have basic spincast reel and rod setups with bobbers, split shot sinkers, swivels, and circle hooks available to borrow. Gear is available to individuals, families, or groups, depending on the site. Find a location, fill out the borrower form, go fishing, and return the items within the return window (some sites allow multiple days). It\u2019s that easy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Go back to basics with baits<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Look no further than your backyard for free bait for your next fishing adventure. Dig in and find earthworms to affix to your hook. Their natural scent and movement make them attractive prey for fish. Worms can be used to fish for a variety of species, including bass, perch, and trout, and they work particularly well as bait for freshwater species.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Search for fishing opportunities on interactive maps<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fishing spots, artificial reefs, boat ramps, trout stocking, and more\u2014DNR has maps to show you the way. Head to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Pages\/maps.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> DNR website <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and you\u2019ll find free access to data about Maryland\u2019s fisheries and tools to help you plan where to cast next.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Get free weekly tips on what\u2019s biting and where<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Predicting how fish will behave based on season, weather, water conditions, and other factors\u00a0 is where the art and science of fishing converge. Experienced anglers know that sharing knowledge and insights makes for better fishing\u2014it&#8217;s why many prefer fishing with a buddy. Consider the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/pages\/fishingreport\/index.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Fishing Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> your new best friend. Weekly reports from spring through fall are broken down by region and cover all the action happening under the water.
