Photo courtesy of Roman Dombrowski, used with permission by Maryland Department of Natural Resources.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Roman Dombrowski, of Baltimore City, has earned a Master Angler Milestone Award under the Maryland Department of Natural Resources\u2019 FishMaryland program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dombrowski, 20, is the 17th Master Angler since the program began in 2019. The award recognizes recreational anglers who catch ten trophy-sized fish of different species in Maryland.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt is hard to even begin to think about what fishing means to me,\u201d Dombrowski said. \u201cI\u2019ll never forget the first fish I caught with my dad. I was 4 years old fishing a canal in Ocean City when I caught my first spot; I was hooked ever since.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As he grew older, Dombrowski gained an ample supply of fishing knowledge working for what he describes as \u201cthe best tackle shop in the world,\u201d the famous Tochterman\u2019s Fishing Tackle in Baltimore City, which has been in business for more than 100 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSpending four years gaining knowledge and being able to spread what I\u2019ve learned to others is something I will never take for granted,\u201d Dombrowski said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dombrowski heard about the milestone award program from his friend and Maryland\u2019s fifth <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2024\/01\/23\/baltimore-county-resident-earns-fishmaryland-master-angler-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Master Angler, Tim Campbell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cHe soon very quickly convinced me to chase this award.\u201d Dombroski said. \u201cWhile chasing this award many memories were made.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dombrowski\u2019s qualifying catches, in order, were:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bullhead catfish &#8211; 17 inches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sheepshead &#8211; 23 inches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Carp &#8211; 39 inches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bluefish- 34 inches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Striped bass &#8211; 47 inches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thresher shark &#8211; 91 inches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sand tiger shark &#8211; 70 inches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Red drum &#8211; 43 inches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Largemouth bass &#8211; 23 inches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bluefin tuna &#8211; 66 inches<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Captain Justin Marshall, owner of Coastal Guide Service, taught Dombrowski a lot about offshore fishing and guided him to catching his 10th and final species, a 66-inch, 185-pound bluefin tuna, which he brought into the boat after a long 40-minute fight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dombrowski is an Environmental Studies major at Salisbury University, and emphasizes the significant meaning that fishing and the outdoors has in his life. His reason for choosing his major in college is so that he can be a part of ensuring that future generations have the ability to experience the same wonders of the outdoors as he does.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe as fishermen are the ones who care the most about conservation because of our love for what we do,\u201d Dombrowski says. \u201cThe FishMaryland program allows anglers to catch and release fish to live another day and those fish may become someone else\u2019s 10th species to reach the Master Angler Milestone\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">FishMaryland is Maryland\u2019s recreational fishing award program and is a fun way to explore year-round recreational fishing and enjoy affordable, accessible, diverse, and high-quality fishing opportunities.
